This year's winner proves do-goodery often requires personal sacrifice and cannot be done alone. Since it started 15 years ago, Project Halo, a no-kill, nonprofit animal rescue and sanctuary, has relied solely on volunteers and donations. Last year, it pulled in $60,000 and rescued 400 animals. As usual, it adopted out about 95 percent. (The rest of the animals go home with volunteers.) Founder Rhonda Thomas says she can't justify taking home a paycheck - "That's money that can go to animals," she says - so she and her husband live on the money he gets from working three jobs.
