Local Issue That Needs More Attention

Homelessness

Staff Pick

There are more than 2,500 homeless people in Charlotte on a given night. State budget cuts have reduced funding for shelters, some receiving two-thirds less than in previous years. While there are many issues that need attention, and some that have suffered even more from budget cuts, the city's homeless deserve more notice than ever. Many paid dearly because of the Democratic National Convention: Some were kicked out of hotels that had raised prices, some were arrested for wandering the downtown streets, while many others simply didn't know where to go that week. Newspapers, including this one, did well to cover the issue. Let's continue the momentum until no one in Charlotte sleeps without a roof over his or her head.
