To create his moody paintings of anonymous buildings that dwarf anonymous figures, Isaac Payne begins with collaged surfaces that he stains with ink. His work has appeared in New American Paintings and will be included in an upcoming exhibition at Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art. Payne also collaborates with Chris Watts (who easily could have snagged this honor, too); together, they make works on paper that are mysterious narratives about the urban experience.
