You're as likely to see Maja Godlewska's paintings and projects in far-flung places, including her hometown of Wroclaw, Poland, as you are to see them here. Her most recent Charlotte exhibition, On Tigers & Putti, at New Gallery of Modern Art last fall, included paintings inspired by frescoes, icebergs and other natural and human-made phenomena. Her work, dense with gold leaf and dripped paint, brims with contrast and contradiction, looking simultaneously sheer and gloppy.
