They only took 18 seasons to develop their highly refined ineptitude, but Charlotte Philharmonic’s Board of Directors actually surpassed Charlotte Rep’s for cluelessness, cravenness and utter disregard for the artists and art form they were supposed to be fostering. Like Rep, their shrewd deficit-reduction strategy was to cancel programming — studying how to raise money and audiences instead of creating a product that might justify them. Devoutly avoiding a desperate appeal to their loyal base, they limply tossed in the towel. Unlike Rep, which at least issued a farewell statement blaming the city, Phil has exited without a word. Maybe this bumbling board is busy fixing their Web site, where the latest Phil season brochure dates back to 2005-06.
