BEST LOCAL ATHLETES

Olympic Swimmers Mark Gangloff & Cullen Jones

Staff Pick

The superstar swimmers represented not only the best of the Queen City, but the best in the entire country as they went to the blocks in Beijing for the 2008 Olympics. Gangloff, who had previously won a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics, competed in the 100m breaststroke, where he placed eighth. Jones, the first African-American to break a long-course world record, won a gold medal this summer in the 4x100m freestyle relay, sharing it with (among others) Michael Phelps. Both Gangloff and Jones trained in Charlotte with SwimMAC Carolina. Way to make us proud, guys. U-S-A! U-S-A!
