BEST FESTIVAL

Yiasou Greek Festival

Staff Pick

Most festivals cater to specific audiences (the Novello Festival of Reading and the Charlotte Literary Festival for bookhounds, the Charlotte Film Festival for movie lovers, etc.), but is there anybody — young, old, black, white, liberal, conservative, gay, straight, innies, outies — who doesn’t enjoy visiting this annual event that began back in 1978? Held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral on East Boulevard, this cultural party is known for its choral and dance performances, art exhibits, and, above all else, delicious food. Honestly, you haven’t lived until you’ve sampled the baklava. Trivia fact of the day: According to the fest Web site (www.yiasoufestival.org), Yiasou is “the Greek word for Hello, Goodbye and Cheers.”
