LOCAL HERO

DENNIS DARRELL

Staff Pick

In a city that’s often devoid of culture, Dennis Darrell was a man on a mission to spread the gospel of independent film across Charlotte. Through his Reel Soul Cinema group, Darrell, who died this year, hosted regular film screenings — most of which focused on African-American movies — and in the process helped to build a still-evolving community of artistic creators, critics and consumers. And he was a hell of a nice guy. He will forever be missed.
