LOCAL HERO

DALE MULLENIX

Staff Pick

In the current circling-the-drain economy, the Urban Ministry Center’s burden has gotten heavier, contributors are harder to come by, and the organization has lost some key people. UMC Director Dale Mullenix, however, has kept things under control. Better yet, the organization has expanded its outreach, and is the force behind Moore Place, an 85-unit apartment complex that will be Charlotte’s first Permanent Supportive Housing for Charlotte’s chronically homeless men and women. It’s scheduled to open in December. UMC’s creative programs for the homeless — art, gardening, soccer, choir, photography and others — have grown, too. Mullenix runs the place, but his is a steady, quietly powerful presence that inspires his folks to do a multitude of good deeds in the face of many obstacles.
