BEST THING TO SHOW OFF TO OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS

THE NEW CULTURAL CAMPUS

Staff Pick

Granted, all the parts aren’t open and humming, but the new Cultural Campus (Gantt Center, Bechtler Museum, Knight Theater, Mint Museum) has given visitors to Charlotte’s center city a reason to bring their cameras — and tourists a cluster of quality attractions to tour. Architecture is most exciting at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and the Gantt Center for African American Arts, keeping the hum of the campus alive during mornings and afternoons, but there’s after dark sass from the Knight Theater’s jumbo-tron screen. Noon and night, the gleaming, jubilant outdoor Niki de Saint-Phalle sculpture stands triumphantly immune to the mockery of Charlotte’s hayseed radio jocks. Nor is the futuristic NASCAR Hall a seedy thing: Across The Green, visitors to stock car racing heaven and the superbly curated Bechtler can gaze toward each other with mutual respect.
