Saturday morning is the time to go to this exceptional Chinese bakery since many items are only baked then. But on any day, the bakery has rows of baked and steamed buns, breads, egg custard tarts and pastry items sold at ridiculously low prices — many under a dollar. Savory treats include barbecue pork buns, scallion breads, and a Chinese version of the cocktail hot dog. Owner and Taiwanese native Jenny Chen and her daughter Alice Chang brought a Taiwanese chef to train the kitchen crew. You can watch these bakers prepare these treats through a large window into the kitchen — and sometimes they will come out and give you samples.
