Lunch Break (4/8/16): Campus protests follow Spellings HB2 enforcement announcement

Posted By on Fri, Apr 8, 2016 at 11:58 AM

Charlotte-based organization Campus Pride is calling for students to continue taking action after University of North Carolina system President Margaret Spellings' announcement on Thursday of her plans to enforce HB2 across 17 college campuses in the UNC system was met with protests on campuses at UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State (see below) and other state schools. Encouraging students to band together, Campus Pride executive director Shane Windmeyer wrote, “Students in the UNC system will not allow their voice to be silenced by the UNC system President, the Governor or the State Legislature. There will be more protests and rallies.” UNC Charlotte Chancellor Dubois issued a statement this morning clarifying what HB2 means for UNCC students: “the Act does not impact the University’s existing nondiscrimination policies,” and “the law does not contain any provisions concerning enforcement. UNC Charlotte will continue to label multiple-occupancy restrooms and changing facilities for single-sex use with appropriate signage.”

A Union County elementary school closed today after 30 percent of students reported symptoms consistent with the Norovirus. The announcement comes just days after a nearby Matthews school was forced to close when “dozens” of staff members developed Norovirus symptoms following a catered staff lunch. Symptoms — which can include vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, fever, and loss of taste — usually appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure. (WBTV Web Staff) In an unrelated incident, South Mecklenburg High School was evacuated this morning when school officials detected the smell of smoke in an administrative office. No statement on what caused the smell, but the school was safely evacuated. (WCNC Staff)

Sections of Brookshire Boulevard and I-85 got an unintended makeover this morning. A flatbed truck carrying a large container of paint was driving onto the I-85 ramp from Brookshire Boulevard when the load fell. Nearly 300 gallons of white latex paint spilled out, completely covering the road. NCDOT has closed the effected lanes, but said they will wait for the paint to dry before beginning the clean-up. (Fox46 Staff)

A 22-year-old Charlotte man was arrested in Gaston County this morning after leading police on a high-speed chase. The man, identified as Jaylin Griffith, was driving on Dallas-Cherryville Highway when police noticed he had no tail lights. When police attempted to pull Griffith over, he hit the gas, reaching speeds of 120 mph on the 55 mile-per-hour road. Police caught up and were able to arrest Griffith, who was found in possession of marijuana and other paraphernalia. He faces multiple charges and is being held in Gaston County on $50,000 bond. Lunch Break (4/7/16): Police investigating city's 13th murder in northwest Charlotte

Posted By on Thu, Apr 7, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Police are investigating a murder that occurred this morning in northwest Charlotte near Mount Holly. According to a CMPD release, officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call on Helms Road at 5:18 a.m. and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim's identity has not been released. No suspect has yet been arrested in the case. (Ryan Pitkin)

As a seemingly stubborn response to the economic blowback resulting from the North Carolina legislature's passing of N.C. House Bill 2, a state senator in South Carolina has now proposed a bill for his state that would bar local governments from requiring businesses to allow transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. When asked about S.C. Sen. Lee Bright's proposal, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley shot down the idea as unnecessary, and it doesn't seem to have much support from the rest of the South Carolina legislature, either. (WSOC Staff)

Police have said a street race is what led to a head-on wreck that injured two people in west Charlotte early this morning. Two brothers, whose names have not been released, were allegedly racing on Mulberry Church Road near Billy Graham Parkway when one tried to pass the other, striking a woman head-on. The woman was sent to the hospital with serious injuries. The man went to the hospital with minor injuries. Both brothers are facing charges. (Ashton Pellom, WBTV)

Both the driver and passenger in a tractor-trailer wreck that shut down lanes on I-85 for much of the day yesterday have passed away, the North Carolina Highway Patrol announced this morning. Christopher Dyer and Rodney Watson were aboard the 18-wheeler, which wrecked on I-85 northbound near North Tryon Street at around 5 a.m. yesterday morning. The wreck closed down the two right lanes of I-85 northbound until late yesterday afternoon and caused traffic problems throughout the day. (Fox46 Staff)

Milestone begins fundraising campaign for lifesaving renovations

Posted By on Wed, Apr 6, 2016 at 11:53 AM

One of Charlotte's most iconic music venues is asking for help from its supporters today in an effort not to become the most recent in a long list of Charlotte venues to shut its doors as of late.

Late Tuesday night, owners of The Milestone in west Charlotte posted a video and a GoFundMe page to raise money for renovations that they say are needed in order for the long-standing venue to keep its doors open.

Carlos Espin, known for his 14-year effort to bring the Area 15 warehouse near NoDa to where it is today, is set to buy the property where The Milestone sits, but said the building needs major renovations costing $150,000 to keep bands coming to the Enderly Park venue as they've been doing since 1969.

Needed renovations include replacing two roofs, one of which hasn't been replaced since the building went up in 1904. In fact, the building itself hasn't been renovated in those 112 years.

"We don't have 14 years at The Milestone," Espin said in a video posted on the GoFundMe page.

On that page, current co-owner Stephanie Hughes wrote about the history of The Milestone, which has hosted mainstream bands like Nirvana, R.E.M. and Melissa Etheridge to punk icons like Bad Brains, Black Flag and Fugazi.

"In the past year, the face of the local music scene in the Queen City has changed dramatically, with the loss of Tremont Music Hall, The Chop Shop and Tommy's Pub," Hughes wrote. "One could call the west side institution, The Milestone Club, the underdog of the music scene, that one constant that has been a haven for up-and-coming musicians since 1969."

She continued, "With a history as legendary as The Milestone's, the rickety Tuckaseegee Road club has managed to survive the eras of new wave, grunge, hardcore, post-punk and everything in between, lived to tell the tale, but not without its share of battle scars. Undoubtedly, the structure has seen better days since the original building was constructed over 100 years ago. The Milestone Club is badly in need of repair to continue to be the constant the city of Charlotte needs."

In a Facebook post from co-owner Jonathan Hughes announcing the GoFundMe campaign, he humbly asked the music community for a helping hand.

"It’s not anyone’s fault," Jonathan wrote. "It’s not the city screwing us or anything... it’s just time taking a toll on things. We don’t want to ask for anyone’s help. We’ve always just gotten by... but that said... we’ve always gotten by. We’ve never paid our rent late. We’ve never had our utilities cut off. We’ve never not paid a band what they were promised or earned. We’ve done it honest and we just want to keep giving our hearts and efforts back to you guys."

Within just a half day of the GoFundMe page going up, Espin had already raised about $6,500, but much more will need to come rolling in to do what's needed to keep The Milestone alive.

"I'm stepping up, doing what I need to do to keep The Milestone open for another 47 years, and I hope you'll step up and respond as well," Espin said in the video.

Lunch Break (4/6/16): Drunken orders from Amazon may now reach you before you sober up

Posted By on Wed, Apr 6, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Following a day of horrendous news for Charlotte's business community, Amazon announced this morning that their same-day delivery service is now available to Prime customers in the Queen City. Joining 11 other metro areas, Charlotte customers can now receive orders by 9 p.m. the same day. (Katherine Peralta, Charlotte Observer)

Northbound I-85 near North Tryon Street has reopened following a crash early this morning involving a tractor-trailer, but traffic is reduced to one lane as officials continue to investigate the scene. The accident occurred at around 4:30 a.m., when the tractor-trailer driver lost control and struck the concrete foundation of an overpass. The cab then caught fire. Though reports don’t indicate how many vehicles were involved in the crash, medics on the scene said two people were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officials reopened one lane for morning commuters at 7:40 a.m., but the damaged North Tryon Street overpass leading to southbound I-85 remains closed. (WCNC Staff)

A Litaker reportedly shot another Litaker on Litaker Road in Salisbury last night. Police indicate that at around 9:45 p.m., Gotti Pacino Litaker was shot in a residence on Litaker Road in Salisbury. Responders found the Mafia-monikored Litaker suffering from a gunshot wound and witnesses at the scene identified the shooter as Keith Daniel Litaker, telling officers that he had fled after the incident. Reports don’t indicate if the men are related. Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Keith Daniel, who remains at large. (WBTV Web Staff)

An FBI investigation led to the arrest of a Statesville man named John White on child pornography charges on Tuesday. Investigators responded to a tip and searched White’s home, discovering pornographic images of young children. White faces 14 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor in the third degree, and is being held by Iredell County police on $75,000 bond. (Fox46 Staff)

HB2 fallout begins in the business community

Posted By on Tue, Apr 5, 2016 at 12:53 PM

Following two weeks in which businesses across the country released statements denouncing the non-inclusive nature of the recently passed House Bill 2 (HB2), today looks to be the day when the state legislature begins to see concrete consequences for its actions.

Just two weeks ago, Governor Pat McCrory joined executives with PayPal to announce that the online payment company would be opening a new global operations center in Charlotte, bringing more than 400 jobs to the area.

Statement from Dan Schulman, president and CEO of PayPal
  • Statement from Dan Schulman, president and CEO of PayPal
Today, PayPal President and CEO Dan Schulman released a statement canceling those plans as a result of the passing of HB2.

"Our decision is a clear and unambiguous one," Schulman wrote. "But we do regret that we will not have the opportunity to be a part of the Charlotte community and to count as colleagues the skilled and talented people of the region. As a company that is committed to the principle that everyone deserves to live without fear of discrimination simply for being who they are, becoming an employer in North Carolina, where members of our teams will not have equal rights under the law, is simply untenable."

He then promised to continue to work with North Carolina's LGBT population to help overturn HB2 while looking for a new location for PayPal to call home.

About two hours later, Charlotte area employer Red Ventures followed suit, with CEO and co-founder Ric Elias tweeting out a copy of an open letter to McCrory just before noon stating that he will "seriously reconsider" adding 500 jobs to Charlotte in 2016, as was the plan, with thousands more coming after that.

Red Ventures is headquartered just over the state border in Fort Mill, but has plans to expand its recently built offices in the University area.

In his letter, Elias recalls a recent conversation he had with the Governor about Elias' decision to support Attorney General Roy Cooper in the North Carolina gubernatorial race. He highlights the way in which the state legislature quickly passed the bill just a matter of hours after it was made public.

"As a former supporter I have always been open and honest with you, but as a citizen of North Carolina I am unable in good conscience to sit idly by and watch while our democracy is manipulated," Elias wrote.

McCrory has not yet responded publicly to the news that his signing of HB2 will result directly in the loss of at least 400 and possible thousands of high-skill jobs in North Carolina, but he did tweet at noon that he would be making a "big announcement" soon at Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, a small town near Greensboro.

Creative Loafing will continue to update this story as it progresses.

Lunch Break (4/4/16): Police investigating early morning shooting at northeast Charlotte hotel

Posted By on Mon, Apr 4, 2016 at 11:30 AM

CMPD is investigating an early morning shooting near the troubled Sugar Creek Road/I-85 interchange. Officers responded to a call at the Economy Inn on Tom Hunter Road at around 2:30 a.m. and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was transported to CMC and is reportedly in stable condition. (Fox46 Staff)

Students at Duke University continue to occupy the college president's office today, in a protest that began Friday and calls for the dismissal of three administrators, including one that protesters say used a racial slur against a parking attendant during an incident two years ago. Nine students are reportedly camping in the waiting area outside of President Richard Bodhead's office. (Associated Press via Charlotte Observer)

Police and fans are gearing up for the UNC Chapel Hill Tar Heels' championship appearance tonight. The Heels will play against Villanova in Houston, but fans are camping out in Chapel Hill to get a chance to watch the game at The Top of the Hill, and they'll also be watching from the Smith Center. There will be a heightened police presence in that area in preparation for any celebrations. (WBTV Web Staff)

CMPD said speed was a factor in a wreck that killed a 14-year-old boy in south Charlotte on Saturday morning, but haven't said yet whether criminal charges will be filed against the driver. Police said 17-year-old Seok Won Andrew Sung was driving well above the speed limit when he lost control of his car at around 4 a.m. on Saturday and hit a tree, killing his front-seat passenger, 14-year-old Joshua Pang.
