Politics Vote 'Yes' for what?

If you're one of those registered to vote inside Charlotte’s city limits who hasn’t taken advantage of the early voting period, and so, to whom a last-minute appeal might make a difference, there are more than a few people who work with the City Council and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce who want to get your attention long enough to urge you to vote in favor of the three Bond proposals on the ballot.
And no — they’re not talking about the issue that stirred up a lot of controversy over the past few months: the proposal to raise the local sales-tax a quarter-cent to increase salaries for local teachers and fund some other budgetary needs, like area arts groups. In fact, that’s part of the problem they’re most worried about. That, if you’re aware at all that there are ballot measures to be considered, you’ll think it’s that one.
It’s not.

First Drip First Drip (10/31/2014): No Class, the Other Don King, more

A North Carolina math teacher has been suspended for allegedly making racist remarks. Camden County High School students say they were in Cynthia Ramsey's classroom eating lunch when the teacher indicated that if she had only 10 days left to live, she would "kill all black people," a parent told local station 10 on Your Side. Ramsey was suspended for a few days with pay and is back in the classroom while the investigation continues.
Don King arrived in Charlotte in the 1970s and became an early activist for gays and lesbians. While working for the Observer in 1986, he became the first editor for QNotes, and helped found Charlotte's Gay Pride festival. King, 72, died Thursday after a long battle with cancer.
J.K. Rowling is releasing a new 1,700-word story on Hogwarts professor Dolores Umbridge. The character, who first appeared in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” is getting a fleshed-out back story which will be published today on Rowling’s website. Free registration is required.
Bad news for vegans; researchers have found that plants may be able to feel when they are being eaten and try to stop the pain.

Arts Cheap list: Grand Opening of Sycamore Brewery, Day of the Dead festivals and more

Going out in Charlotte doesn't have to be expensive. In fact, to prove that statement, we've compiled a list of cheap - $10 or less - things to do in the Q.C. this weekend. These events may vary, but they're all entertaining and they won't break your bank (piggy banks excluded).
Fresh Tide: Art + Music + Stuff at Neighborhood Theatre: This month's Fresh Tide features photography by Katherine Kirchner, Alexis Smith and Graham Morrison. It's a good time with an artist's reception at 7 p.m., music from Joshua Cotterino at 8 p.m. and Dylan Gilbert of Hectorina at 9 p.m. There will also be a costume party, drink specials and more. Free admission from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.; $3 cover after 8 p.m. Oct. 30. Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. 704-942-7997. www.neighborhoodtheatre.com.
Awesome Adventures Halloween Bar Crawl: Awesome Random Adventures: Charlotte's 20s & 30s Social Club (a 2014 winner of CL's Best of Charlotte for "Best Meetup to Get You Out of the House") presents this Halloween-themed bar crawl. $10 gets you into participating stops on the crawl for free, in addition to appetizers at Phil's Tavern, a free drink (and a cheapo-friendly $1 drink to follow). Glitterati Ball at Chop Shop: $10 (in advance) gets you into this Halloween shindig that's well worth getting dress up for. But it's the people-watching that really gets us excited for this event. This year's "Freak Show" theme is sure to feature some very interesting costumes. Oh, and there's a costume contest with $1,500 up for grabs. Oct. 31. Grand Opening at Sycamore Brewing: What better way to celebrate Charlotte's ever-growing brewery scene than with a nice, cold craft beer from the newbie on the block, Sycamore Brewing. The grand opening will feature plenty brews, live music (Time Sawyer, Of Good Nature, Little District, and Dust & Ashes) and food (Yummi Banh Mi, Papa Libretto's Street Pizza, Hot Box Next Level Street Food). Culture Longtime EB's bartender leaves to open his own spot

After more than a quarter of a century, people are saying it’s the end of an era. Not a ton of people, but definitely some. And it said so on Facebook too, so it must be true.
Warren Stiles has been the bar manager and bartender at Elizabeth Billiards on Central Avenue for more than 27 years. On early Saturday morning, he will clock out for the last time, leaving his position at one of Charlotte’s most eclectic, and least exclusive, private clubs and going into business for himself just down the road.

Wednesday night’s season opener saw the biggest comeback in Charlotte NBA history. The Hornets trailed by 24 midway through the third quarter but point guard Kemba Walker made two huge shots. The first one forced overtime, and the second won the game with five seconds on the clock, to make a 108-106 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Early voting in North Carolina is seeing a higher turnout than in previous midterm elections, despite the General Assembly’s move last year to shorten the early voting period from 17 days to 10. Researchers say one of the main drivers is the white-hot race between incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan and Thom Tillis. So far, these early voters appear to be giving Democrats the edge.
Immigrants make their way to America to try and create a better life for themselves, and they'll take any job available to do it. That's exactly what happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The dirtiest and most dangerous jobs were given to day laborers, most of them immigrants and most of them undocumented. David Noriega of BuzzFeed tracked down nearly two dozen of those workers, who came from Mexico as well as countries in Central and South America.
In case you have it confused, Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is not Halloween, and it’s offensive to paint your face like a sugar skull just to get wasted Friday night. Get some background on this sacred family-oriented tradition and consider honoring your own dead ancestors instead.

Arts Light Factory's Moment Mile project to capture Charlotte shots

Call it what you want - whether that be the ultimate photo-bombing experience or an innovative idea that takes Charlotte's artistic talents to another level - but The Light Factory's Moment Mile project is something to witness and be a part of this Saturday. The project, bringing more than 150 photographers together to take shots along Uptown's Tryon Street (between I-227 North and I-277 South), will culminate in one great big panoramic shot (estimated at being 100 feet long and 4 ½ inches tall) from varying photographers' frames.
The Knight Foundation is funding the project and has offered $10,000 (that should help the non-profit organization to pay some bills!) for a print of the panoramic shot that results from the shutter action.
The first shot will happen at 6:15 p.m. when photogs will face east on Tryon Street, and the second takes place at 6:20 p.m. on the opposite side of the street facing west.
