Five days after Vice President Joe Biden encouraged a ban on assault weapons, a Charlotte man pleaded guilty to buying and illegally selling them at local gun shows.

Blame the first two people who formed a line. Blame the powerful recliner lobby. For whatever reason, standing has developed a bad rap. I used to hate it. I'd dramatically glance at my nonexistent watch when waiting longer than two minutes to pay for groceries. But not anymore. No, I have seen the light. Or, I'm closer to it, anyway.
Two weeks ago, using some abandoned mail boxes I found around the CL office, I propped my computer monitor, keyboard and mouse high enough so that I could stand while working. Essentially, I created a standing desk. I could have gone the more expensive route - real standing desks are pricey - but as a journalist, that would have meant sacrificing my retirement fund.

Reality TV star Jonny Fairplay is best known for lying about his grandmothers death, while competing on CBS' Survivor: Pearl Islands. The villainous Fairplay just couldn't seem to play fair. Nonetheless he's making the most of his flaws with a new show that's dubbed "Tall Tales, Short Stories and Lies". Fairplay performs with comedian Kevin Alderman this Thursday at Volume Lounge. There are things about Rob Schneider that are funny and ... there are things that just aren't. A go-to for silly, goofball movie roles, Schneider has starred in his fair share of box office hits and flops alike. His latest stint on the film scene involved lending his voice to an animated South Korean film that we'll probably never watch. Still, we've got his persona as Deuce Bigalow forever etched in our minds . Folks who fancy Schneider can see him in the flesh (no, not that kind of flesh ... gross) when he comes to The Comedy Zone for five stand-up shows. $25-$30. Atlanta-based comedian Joe Pettis isn't bothered about being an illegitimate child - or at least it doesn't seem that way in his stand-up act. Pettis boldly shares his nonchalant opinions about not knowing who his father is and finds humor in his mom's unsure disclosure. He does so while proudly sporting a colorful sleeve of tattoos and facial hair, crucial to his rabid hipster following. You can catch Pettis and witness his wittiness when he visits the Q.C. for a one-night-only performance at Petra's. $7-$10. Ari Fleischer put it best when he said the GOP is a tale of two parties. "On the governor's level we're a very successful party. On the federal level we have some major problems that need to be addressed."
President George W. Bush's former press secretary joined other GOPers for the Republican National Committee's annual meeting, held last week in Charlotte. It was the party's chance to confront serious problems it faced in the last presidential election and prepare for the next few years. But if the first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem, it was clear, save for a few moments of clarity, that most Republicans aren't ready to find their footing.

Music Local music festival Treasure Fest III announces initial lineup

Treasure Fest III, a fringe-leaning music festival taking place on May 17-18 at various Plaza Midwood venues, announced its initial lineup today.
Among the indie and underground acts performing at the third annual event are Franz Nicolay, Whatever Brains, Yardwork, Center of the Sun, Chalkies, Pullman Strike and Late Bloomer. The final lineup will feature more than 50 metal, hardcore, punk and indie-rock bands from up and down the east coast, including a heavy representation from the Charlotte area. Venues include Studio 1212, Twenty Two, Common Market, Lunchbox Records and Snug Harbor. Tickets are $25.
Treasure Fest was started by Joshua Robbins, the founder of the Charlotte indie label Self-Aware Records in an effort to foster the local music scene and provide bands with an effort to network with similar artists.
