North Carolina residents can bet on sports online before Jan 8 with Fanduel Promo Codes

In 2018, the United States Supreme Court made the decision to repeal the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, effectively handling the legality of sports betting back to each individual state in the union to decide for themselves. Since then, these states have met the issue with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Some states, like New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, jumped on the opportunity and brought sports betting to their jurisdictions as soon as possible.

Others, like Kentucky, Louisiana, and Arizona, took a bit more time to assess how sports betting would impact their communities, both positively and negatively. These states were able to analyze the results from those that legalized sports betting from the onset, with many states needing multiple revisions of proposals or even new officials to get their active measures eventually passed.

Some states, like California, Texas, and Florida, still haven't lifted their bans on sports betting, although there are supporters for doing so in every part of the country.

As of today, 33 states allow sports betting in some way, either online, in-person, or both. Three states, Maine, Nebraska, and Vermont, have pending legislation submitted that should eventually legalize sports betting in one way or another in the near future. That leaves 14 states where legalized sports betting is still at least a year away from becoming a reality.

Is sports betting legal in North Carolina?

Thankfully for residents of North Carolina, their state is not among that group of 14. In fact, bettors didn't have to wait long before they received good news. In 2019, SB 514 made its way through the legislative bodies of North Carolina, legalizing retail sports betting at the state's tribal locations.

While it only took a year for the state to legalize sports betting, it wasn't until March 2021 that North Carolina's first retail sportsbooks opened for business and accepted their first wagers. But, thanks to SB 514, residents of the Tar Heel State were able to gamble on sports without any fear of legal repercussions.

Those who wanted to be able to cast wagers from the comfort of their own home through the operators in North Carolina still have to wait, however. As SB 514 only legitimized sports betting in person at tribal locations, mobile and online sports betting was still completely barred.

Later that same year, though, North Carolina Senators elected to pass a new provision to the State House for discussion, SB 688. This bill would have allowed for 10-12 sportsbooks to launch online and mobile services in the state. The bill, however, failed to carry its momentum through the House by a slim vote, effectively tabling the matter of mobile sports betting for another year.

When will Fanduel and mobile sports betting be legal in North Carolina?

But supporters of online sports gambling didn't waver, and HB 347 was drafted to try to bring mobile betting to North Carolina once again. This time, the bill passed the House vote first before making its way to the State Senate. The senators emphasized their original desires with SB 688 and approved HB 347, at which point it made its way to the governor's desk. On June 14, 2023, Governor Roy Cooper signed the bill, approving sportsbooks to launch their online and mobile operations any time after January 8, 2024.

Unfortunately, bettors in North Carolina will still have to wait at least another three months before they're able to access mobile sportsbooks from the comfort of their home. While residents of the state will have to hang on until at least January 8 to take advantage of DraftKings's sportsbook, they can play DraftKings's Daily Fantasy Games anytime.

DraftKings and other DFS operators offer their patrons the ability to wager real money on a team they assemble using a designated salary cap they're given to compete against other drafters. These teams generate points based on their players' real-life performances, and the top teams earn their constructors real money. Those looking to take advantage of DraftKings's sportsbooks come January 8 can familiarize themselves with DraftKings's platform now by playing its Daily Fantasy games.
