Recreate Obama's feast

Posted By on Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 10:50 AM

After Barack Obama takes the oath of office and delivers his inaugural address today, he will be escorted to Statuary Hall in the US Capitol for a three-course feast, which is the traditional inaugural luncheon. The meal is also a tribute to the favorite foods of America's 16th president Abraham Lincoln.

Although not invited to this exclusive luncheon, you too can feel included and enjoy the same meal that our new president will be eating this afternoon.  The recipes for the dishes have been released by the Inaugural Committee and are listed below. Molasses whipped sweet potatoes and duck breast with sour cherry chutney... oh my!

First course

Seafood stew - scallops, shrimp, lobster with a puff pastry top... paired with Duckhorn Vineyards, 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley

Second course

A brace of American birds: Duck breast with sour cherry chutney and Herb roasted pheasant with wild rice stuffing with Molasses whipped sweet potatoes and Winter vegetables ...

paired with Goldeneye, 2005 Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley

Third course

Cinnamon apple sponge cake and sweet cream glace...

paired with Korbel natural "special inaugural cuvee" California Champagne.

The menu is created by Design Cuisine, from Arlington, Virginia.

Obama-rama: Nude Blogging Part 3

Posted By on Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 10:50 AM

Today, I'm taking in the Inaugration of Barack Obama on my couch by watching every network. This is history.

9:34: CNBC is even hopping on the Obama train. The stock exchange opened up on the steps of the federal building where the first Inauguration happened.

9:35: MSNBC: is showing Don King in the crowd with a jean jacket on with the White House on the back and no hat. The Metro transit system has already taken over 200,000 people to the Mall.

9:45: The church service just wrapped up. And the camera is trained on the doors of the church waiting for the president-elect and his wife to exit. It sure does take a long time for Obama to get in and out of the car.

Obama-rama Nude Blogging Part 5

Posted By on Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 10:40 AM

Today, I'm taking in the Inaugration of Barack Obama on my couch by watching every network. This is history.

ABC:

10:21: So many people have been coming to the mall by Metro and one person was hit by a train, a 68-year-old woman. She's alive, but they don't know her condition. The main train has been shut down. There have been some heart attacks.

10:38: Spike Lee is glad to be there and he is wearing a Yankee's hat with flaps and fur. Lee is humble--for a change. Robin Roberts said her mom is in the crowd. Spike Lee said there has never been two days like this back to back in the history of this country.

A man in the crowd held up a sign that read, "Nov. 4, 2008: Mission Accomplished. Go Obama."

The crowd is well behaved according to ABC News.

Today, I'm taking in the Inaugration of Barack Obama on my couch by watching every network. This is history.

9:27 a.m.: Headline News is reporting that Obama is going to the bathroom. Kidding, but did we really need to know or care that after church he and Michelle are going to have coffee with the Bush Family?

On a side note, the new prez mobile is hot!

FDR, JFK and Obama: a few inauguration parallels

Posted By on Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 10:25 AM

Many observers have compared President-elect Barack Obama to FDR and John F. Kennedy: all three are ranked as articulate, trenchant speakers; all three took office with considerable — even nearly insurmountable, as in the case of the Great Depression — challenges. And the public spirit of FDR’s inauguration in March 1933 and JFK’s in January 1961 seems much similar to the public outpouring we see today.

FDR’s inauguration took place amid dire circumstance. 1933 is commonly acknowledged as the worst year of the Depression; days before Roosevelt’s inauguration, banks were shutting down. Here's the Times of London's coverage of his inauguration. Tickets to the inauguration were sold out, despite the nation’s widespread unemployment and financial fears, yet by today’s standards its crowds were paltry; to accommodate the largest crowd ever in the inaugural’s viewing, organizers erected stands to hold 59,000 people. Obama’s inauguration is attracting several million to Washington, D.C.; the events’ security detail alone involves more than 40,000 people.

The overwhelming sentiment in 1961 was that John Kennedy was leading us into a new era. Jack Rosenthal, a former New York Times editor who worked in the Kennedy administration, writes in the paper about the likeness:

And others, who like me streamed into Washington 48 years ago excited by John F. Kennedy’s exhortation to “get this country moving again,” see a new New Frontier.

Washingtonians say they haven’t experienced anything like the present surge of enthusiasm since 1961 when J.F.K. took his oath in the pale sun and icy wind. We came full of confidence that a generous America could rise to new heights, escaping what one orator called “the broad fairways of indifference” of the Eisenhower years.

A NYT story from the day before Kennedy’s inauguration described an “increasingly frenzied city” and noted that the inauguration would be “told in more tongues and seen in more lands than any previous American political event.”

Today, I'm taking in the Inauguration of Barack Obama on my couch by watching every network. This is history.

9:20 a.m.: Now Headline News is making a big stretch telling people that sports figures played a role in Obama's election. If that was true there would've been a black president a long time ago. I think the networks are running out of things to say.

Today, I'm taking in the Inauguration of Barack Obama on my couch by watching every network. This is history.

But it's getting to be a bit much!

9:10 a.m.: CNN takes us inside Barack Obama and Michelle Obama's 45-second ride to church. After that they reported on the suspcious packages that have been investigated, then they showed the snipers on top of the Smithsonian. If those are the snipers you see, I wonder where are the ones you don't see?
