First Drip (5/29/15): John's Country Kitchen to close

John's Country Kitchen is closing after nearly 40 years in its Plaza Midwood location. The owners said they are moving on to other things after the landlord upped the rent on them for the in-demand Central Avenue location. John Margiotis opened JCK with his mother in 1977. 



Davidsonnews.net and Corneliusnews.net are stopping publication as of today. The online publications were launched by David Boraks about nine years ago. In his announcement column, Boraks said he will travel to Europe while his editor Lyndsay Kibiloski and ad rep Brandon Butler pursue a new business venture together. 



Gov. Pat McCrory vetoed a bill that would allow magistrates to opt out of performing marriages if they hold a religious objection. He vetoed the bill only hours after the House passed the bill with a 67-43 vote. In his statement, McCrory said he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman but that he is vetoing the bill on Constitutional grounds. 



The largest sovereign wealth fund in the world will reportedly divest all of its shares in Duke Energy and other major coal-burning companies, pending a vote from the Norwegian parliament. The Norwegian Pension Fund Global's divestment will take effect in January 2016 if the vote passes. The Norwegian Parliament's finance committee voted unanimously to divest the fund's stake in Duke and other large coal-burning utilities on Wednesday. 



Construction on the Monroe Bypass in eastern Union County will continue despite legal action against it, according to a news release from NCDOT. The highway, nicknamed the "Bypass to the Beach" has caused controversy among Union County residents regarding its large price tag and the large amounts of property to be affected in the towns of Hemby Bridge, Stallings and Indian Trail.

First Drip (5/28/15) No death penalty in 'Top Model' killings

Prosecutors announced they will not seek the death penalty in the killings of a local "America's Next Top Model" contestant and three others in February. 



A bill that would extend the waiting period for women wanting abortions in North Carolina has moved closer to a state Senate vote. 



Charlotte native Steph Curry and his Golden State Warriors are in this year's NBA Finals. Watch his two-year-old daughter Riley steal the show (again) at last night's press conference



Police have asked the community
for help in solving the May 2 murder of a man in Monroe.

First Drip (5/27/15): Teen drowned at Mountain Island Lake

A 17-year-old North Meck High School student drowned at Mountain Island Lake on Tuesday. The teen had been swimming with friends and detectives are investigating for a cause.

The North Carolina DMV is doing away with the two-sticker system to identify vehicle registration. Moving forward, there will only be one gray sticker with the month and year on it in the upper right corner of the plate. The DMV will save an estimated $70,000 per year with the change. 

Charlotte ranks 33rd out of the country's biggest 51 cities when it comes to energy efficiency. Two years ago, Charlotte ranked 31st. Rankings come from the energy efficiency of their government operations, community initiatives, buildings, utilities and transportation.

The U.S. Department of Justice indicted 14 FIFA officials on Wednesday charging them with racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy.

The Cleveland Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals after sweeping the series against the Atlanta Hawks. They'll face the winner of the best-of-7 series between the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets. Golden State leads the series 3-1, with Game 5 scheduled for tonight.

First Drip (5/26/15): Area worship leader Gentry Eddings loses son in wreck

Support has poured in after a south Charlotte worship leader's son was killed in a car wreck near Wilmington involving the entire family. Gentry Eddings, a worship leader at Forest Hills Church, and his wife suffered only minor injuries, but their 2-year-old son, Dobbs, was killed. The wife, Hadley Gentry, was 8 months pregnant and delivered a baby boy, Reed, by emergency C-section. Supporters have raised nearly $80,000 in one day via a GoFundMe page to help with the family's medical expenses. UPDATE: The newborn boy has died from injuries suffered in the wreck.

Carowinds plans to close its Thunder Road roller coaster on July 26 in preparation for further renovations of the park. The coaster has been open for nearly 40 years and takes riders on a series of hills and drops on the border of North and South Carolina.

Former Davidson College basketball player Stephen Curry, currently in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors, was injured last night during a playoff game against the Houston Rockets. The current NBA MVP suffered a head contusion in the second quarter and returned in the third. The Warriors are up 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. 

Charter Communications plans to merge with Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks creating a media giant that will compete with AT&T, Verizon and Comcast. Customers won't notice an immediate impact in their bills, but the company said it hopes to improve service, including improved cable TV and faster broadband.

Taco Bell and Pizza Hut will be doing away with artificial colors and flavors. The new recipes, which remove things like Yellow No. 6 and "black pepper flavor," will be in place by the end of the year.
