Culture Resolution Solution: 10 races coming to the area

If getting in shape is on your list of resolutions for 2015, go big or go home. Here's a list of upcoming races in Charlotte, from 5Ks to obstacle courses, to get your blood pumping. Register as soon as possible to set those goals into motion.
First Footin' 5 Miler Trail Race at Historic Rural Hill The term "First Footin'" comes from Scottish tradition, where it represented festivities associated with New Year. Rural Hill presents its own celebration, also dubbed as Hogmanay, and it all kicks off with a 5-mile race. It's a terrain-style course, so come prepared for a woodsy experience. Resolution Race Series at Fort Mill Branch YMCA The purpose of this series is to get folks to jumpstart the new year with a 5K and work their way up to a half-marathon over the course of 13 weeks (and other scheduled races). Farewell, 2014. As we carb up for tonight and consider all the chocolate we must throw out tomorrow, let's take one final look at the year that was, via the stories on our website.
(This list excludes the sex-y stuff. If you're interested, though, this story and this story got lots — and I mean lots — of traffic.)

Saying “one more term might be about right,” Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter on Tuesday formally signaled his plans to run for election next year. Clodfelter filed a preliminary document with the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections. Though filing for office doesn’t start until July, Tuesday’s document lays the legal groundwork for a campaign committee.
Hundreds of Raleigh taxi drivers are threatening to strike on New Year's Eve to protest what they see as unfair competition from ride-sharing services. Iyman Massoud, who says he represents about 650 taxi drivers for Raleigh's 1,200 or so licensed cabs, said Monday that he and his fellow drivers are tired of competing against services such as Uber and Lyft, which he said can charge lower rates because they don't have to meet the same licensing, registration and insurance requirements.
Speaker John Boehner’s decision to push out a congressman guilty of tax fraud but back Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who admits having spoken at a white supremacist group's rally, garners mixed reactions from his party.
As of Thursday, Jan. 1, 21 states and Washington, D.C. will raise their minimum wages above the federally mandated $7.25 an hour. Southern states participating in the hike include Maryland, Arkansas, Florida and West Virginia, but neither of the Carolinas will be following suit. The highest rate will be in Washington State, where the minimum wage will hit $9.47.
The United States has officially surpassed the "epidemic" threshold with this season's flu virus, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC estimates that nearly 7% of all deaths nationwide were due to pneumonia and influenza during the week ending December 20 -- the last week for which the agency has compiled figures on the outbreak. Influenza is now "widespread" in 36 states, the agency said Tuesday, and nationwide, 15 children have died so far this flu season. This year's flu strain has mutated in ways that make the vaccine less effective than experts initially hoped.

Arts Catch local Kennedy Center honoree Patricia McBride on TV tonight

Tonight, you can catch Charlotte Ballet's own Patricia McBride on the television broadcast of the 37th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. She was honored for her longtime dedication to the performing arts. Perusing the Internets, I've compiled a handful of quotes from the leading lady that I think show just how classy she is.

Family members of those aboard AirAsia Flight 8501 collapsed in agony Tuesday as images of debris and a bloated body flashed across Indonesian television screens, proof that the plane crashed into the sea two days earlier with 162 people on board. The low-cost carrier vanished Sunday halfway through a two-hour flight between Surabaya, Indonesia and Singapore after encountering storm clouds, sparking an international hunt with dozens of planes, ships and helicopters.
Ebola has roared back, claiming more than 7,800 lives, but how? Well-intentioned veterans of past Ebola campaigns tragically underestimated this outbreak, overlooking clues that now seem apparent. Comic Afterthoughts Year in Review: The best of comics (and one bomb)

Some will tell you that comics just aren't what they used to be.
They're right, but in the best way possible. They're more diverse than they've ever been, offered in formats that include the classic single issue, digital issue, softcover and hardcover collections, and experimental sizes (like the great Hip-Hop Family Tree, from Fantagraphics Books). Current titles span more genres than you could wrap your head around. New cultures and demographics have entered mainstream continuities, and women are (mostly) treated as sentient beings.
So yes, comics have changed. And 2014 may be my favorite year in comics yet.
Best Miniseries: The Wake
It's a dark horse winner (but not from the Dark Horse Comics imprint). Scott Snyder did some exciting things with Batman this year, but his Image miniseries, The Wake, was special. The Critchton-esque thriller weaved in and out of hard sci-fi and abstract fantasy, from the beginning of creation to a harrowing future. For those easily freaked out by what the depths of the oceans hold, this was the scariest comic of the year. But no matter your phobia, this title is an example of why Snyder deserves to be at the helm of mainstream books.
