Depending on your commuting habits, "fast" and I-485 don't belong in the same sentence. Those regularly stuck in rush-hour traffic on the southside and those who waited patiently while the Department of Transportation promised, re-canted then re-promised new-exit opening dates for Brookshire Boulevard, W. W.T. Harris Road, I-77 (northside) and Statesville Road know what I'm talking about: A promise regarding Interstate 485 is about as good as bank CEOs saying they'll forgo their bonuses this year.
Construction on the last segment of Interstate 485 should begin by the end of the year six years ahead of the current construction schedule, Gov. Bev Perdue said Tuesday. In a surprise announcement, Perdue and Transportation Secretary Gene Conti said federal stimulus money could pay for part of the highway, which would complete Charlotte's often-delayed 65-mile loop.

The Highs:
1. The hilarious Judd Apatow-penned skit in which Seth Rogen and James Franco, reprising their Pineapple Express roles, watched the Oscar-nominated films under the influence.
Say "bye-bye" to your 2012 presidential dreams, Gov. Jindal. Louisiana's Republican governor the one refusing to accept stimulus help for his cash-starved state was the super-star chosen by Republicans to follow up Obama's well-received speech with the party's official response. I think it's safe to say the Republicans think we're a bunch of dumb five-year-olds.
Gov. Bobby Jindal's task tonight, to rebut President Obama's first address to a joint session of Congress, was a thankless one. But it still constituted an opportunity for the Louisiana Republican to show that he could handle the national spotlight, present himself as a fresh face of the Republican Party, and stand up to the current president oratorically. On each of these three hurdles, he came up short. Both Democrats and Republicans alike panned Jindal's rebuttal in terms that were decidedly harsh: "amateurish," "laughable" and, most commonly, "a missed opportunity."
"After watching Jindal," one Democratic strategist emailed, "I'd pay a lot of money to be back watching a Palin speech."
"Awkward with capital A," emailed another.

As the nation reels from one bad bit of economic news to another, the city has been shaken by the collapse of Wachovia and the near-implosion of Bank of America. BofA honcho Ken Lewis is in hot water for rushing into a purchase of Merrill Lynch, which turned out to be the straw or maybe 50 billion bales of straw that broke the camel's back. For a fresh outlook on the BofA crisis, check out this story from a San Francisco CBS TV affiliate, which interviewed the granddaughter of the man who founded Bank of America in that city in the early 1900s. Short version: Current management is "totally repulsive," she says, and asks the trenchant question, "What kind of idiots are running that bank ? "
