According to me, it’s the 2,191st Anniversary of 9/11

By Rudy Giuliani

I share a unique position with very few people. Namely with just myself. Six years ago, on 9/11, I was there at Ground Zero. And almost no one else can say that. Suffice to say, I view this tragedy differently from those who are not me, i.e. those who have not been through all that I have. To speak plainly, those who weren't wearing a hard hat or speaking into a bullhorn. Most would say today is the sixth anniversary of 9/11. But, as a man WHO WAS THERE, I disagree:

You may have read the following comment I made: "For me every day is an anniversary of Sept. 11"

Which, by my math, means that today is actually the 2,191st anniversary of this terrible tragedy. And that gives me 2,185 more anniversaries than pretty much everyone else. You might ask: Rudy, does it feel like 2,191 anniversaries? And I'd answer: No. It feels like more. Sometimes I celebrate two or more 9/11 anniversaries on the same day. Why? Because it's important to always talk about it:

"If we don't talk about Sept. 11, you can't prepare to try to avoid another Sept. 11."

In all honesty, talking about 9/11 is not something I like to do. Because, really, I'm not a talker. I'm not a fan of the limelight. But as the only man in this country who understands the importance of avoiding another September 11th, it's the cross I bear. Some ideas for preventing another 9/11:

  • Officially rename the day between 9/10 and 9/12: 9/RUDY.
  • Alternatively, rename the month of September: Giulianiary

That's all I got so far. Get your e-mail suggestions in!

Live Review: Satellite Party

Satellite Party w/ Mink

The Orange Peel, Asheville

Sept. 10, 2007

The Deal: Former Jane's Addiction/Porno for Pyros frontman Perry Farrell showcases new band, old songs.

The Good: Opener Mink played a solid set of retro-rock. Their energetic frontman was all over the place — in a good way — and did a great job of warming up the crowd. Farrell's new band may have switched up lineups in the last few months after guitarist Nuno Bettencourt left, but the new guys were just as tight. The band played a mix of songs from Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros and their own stuff - "Just Because," "Mountain Song," "Wish Upon a Dog Star," "Superhero" and the encore of "Stop" and "Jane Says." (They practiced "Ocean Size" during sound check, but it wasn't performed.) Perry's voice was in perfect form, his wife, Etty, writhed around while singing backup vocals and new guitarist Nick Perry.

The Bad: It wasn't Jane's Addiction. And it was a bit odd/funny that Farrell was wearing a black and white striped shirt - just like Billy Corgan did back in June.

The Deal: Farrell is an amazing performer, but it still wasn't Jane's. Keep your eye on Mink ...

Rally for the Jena Six

Posted By on Wed, Sep 12, 2007 at 3:32 PM

Have you heard of the Jena 6?

The case of six black teenagers, accused of attempted second-degree murder in the beating of a white teen, has drawn attention from civil rights activists, who fear the youths’ prosecution in a small Louisiana town is racially motivated.

Jena has had severally racially tinged incidents in the past year, beginning when white teens hung nooses from a schoolyard tree.

Buses of people are headed to Jena on Sept. 19 to show support for Mychal Bell, who has a court appearance scheduled Sept. 20.

27-year-old Tamara Allen is behind the local effort after hearing about the case on the Michael Baisden radio show.

"Once I heard about this, it just empowered me, so to speak, to want to do something," Allen says. "I knew I wanted to go down there."

Allen’s reserved one bus and has another on standby for the 100 people or more she hopes make the caravan to Jena.

At least one bus is scheduled to leave at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 19 from Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3301 Beatties Ford Rd. Cost to ride is $112.24.

For more information, e-mail Allen at ncsupportsjenasix@gmail.com, call 704-307-2191 or visit www.praisepreview.com/jena6.asp

Lazy nonvoters

Posted By on Tue, Sep 11, 2007 at 10:59 PM

About 5 percent of Mecklenburg County voters actually bothered to, uh, vote today, according to this Charlotte Observer graphic. Since Republicans and unaffiliated voters make up about half or so of the county electorate, that means about 10 percent of eligible folks turned out. Craptastic.

ballotbox_100.gif

Is it really that damn hard to drive to a precinct, a library or the board of elections in the days leading up to voting day? It took me three minutes this morning to walk in, press the touch-screen, and walk out.

Most of us can't donate big to parties, can't make a few well-placed calls to Powerful People. Even if the act seems woefully ineffectual, voting is one of the few ways we can have a modicum of clout. And yet, when I walked into my precinct at 9:15 a.m., precinct workers told me I was the first voter they'd had.

How many folks, ya think, don't mind sending troops overseas to fight for free elections in Iraq, but are too damned shiftless to actually vote in their own elections?

(Whew. That's a lot of sanctimony this late in the evening.)

Live Review: Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore

Amos' Southend

Sept. 9, 2007

The Deal: Singer/actress aims to prove that she's moved past her teen pop years.

The Good: I expected a light, pop show as heard on the singer's new album, Wild Hope, but was pleasantly surprised. Moore may be better known as an actress these days, but she showcased her base as a singer to the small crowd of a few hundred. While most of the songs came from the new album, she also performed a few covers — Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow" and Rihanna's "Umbrella" were among them. The only song from her early days was a reworked "Candy," and Moore was shocked by the crowd asking for "Only Hope." "We don't know that one, yet," she told the crowd. "I had no idea people liked it so much!" Maybe it will be on the setlist the next time around. The addition of a full band gave Moore a full sound that was a little more rock than is heard on the album.

The Bad: Amazingly, I really can't pick out anything bad about the show. Moore is still young and appeared uncomfortable at times, but for the most part, she had fun and showed that she is doing what she loves by singing on stage. She noted that it's her first "real tour" after performing only a few songs a night during her teen years. She saved "Umbrella" and "Candy" for the last two songs of the night, which left her unprepared for an encore — or so it appeared.

The Verdict: There's a lot of potential here. Moore's live show has more energy and a slightly harder edge than the new album would let on. If she can keep the music going - without disappearing into acting for years at a time — her fan base will definitely increase. She'll shed the teen pop image in no time.

Ready! Set! Speed Dial!

by Fred Thompson

I announced today via the telephone that I would be a candidate for the Republican nomination. The only lazier way was smoke signals, and there ain’t no Navajo word for Giuliani.

The call to my supporters was to be 10 minutes but went longer 'cause in the middle I got another call, and shoot I refinanced the house right there on the phone, so Big Freddie was two for two without leaving the hammock.

I’m gonna be on The Tonight Show Wednesday. Johnny must be on vacation because I got the Leno kid. Gonna talk about trucks and stuff. I'm trying to set it up through satellite cause 5:30’s pretty late up in these parts.

Then on Thursday I will officially announce my candidacy, via video.

Shoot, if I keep this up I’m gonna spend less time on my feet than FDR.

Big Freddie in ’08. Born to sit.
