Just over three years ago, I caught Lake Street Dive during a sold-out show at the Evening Muse. Since that time, the band has been back in town several times, performing for sold-out crowds at bigger venues along the way.

Enter Friday night, and the pop-jazz-rock band was playing to its largest Charlotte crowd yet at the packed Fillmore. After a stunning opening set from The Lone Bellow, it was hard to imagine any band being strong enough to follow it up, but Lake Street Dive showed the audience why they continue to grow an already loyal fanbase.

From the opening notes, the quartet commanded the stage, had fun and offered a top-notch performance from start to finish. The band focused on its latest release, 2016's Side Pony, but didn't hesitate to mix in plenty of older material, as well.

While the band can't connect quite as easily as they used to with a smaller venue that's packed to the gills, their music and energy does enough to bring in the audience a bit and connect on more of a sonic level — plenty of sing alongs, and good vibes flowing from wall to wall.
