Melanie Martinez
Amos' Southend
Aug. 26, 2015
Donning a furry blue dress and white ankle socks, Melanie Martinez hit the stage to perform her child-influenced pop songs with a bit of attitude on Wednesday night at Amos' Southend. It's easy to see the appeal. Her songs have as much playful attitude as bite.
"I don't give a fuck about you anyways/ Whoever said I gave a shit about you?" she sings on "Play Date." Her music comes across as Katy Perry meets Lily Allen. And the 'x'-handed (for under 21), full-of-screams audience loved every minute of it. They sang along to every song, including the B-sides, and wanted more than the one hour they got.
The 20-year-old singer — who handled constant in-ear monitor problems all night — gained national attention via
The Voice, when she finished in the top 6 during the 2012 season. Judging by her performance at Amos' and the crowd's reaction, she's going to be around for a while.
