Live review: Common

The Forum

May 29, 2010

The Deal: Rapper turned actor proves he can still rock the mic at party for his new movie, Just Wright, at The Forum on Saturday night.

The Good: Surprisingly energetic. Only rocked five songs and one long, a capella freestyle but he managed to make that short of a set memorable. His Charlotte-themed freestyle that touched on pretty much all the prominent Charlotte athletes, including Bobcats majority owner Michael Jordan, Gerald Wallace and Steve Smith. He also hit Northlake Mall, Soul Food spots and strip clubs before shouting out his movie co-stars.

DJ DR and DJ Tab D’Bia$$i both kept the crowd from staring at the clock and demanding Common to come out by bumping two polar opposite sets with DR going classic and old school with A Tribe Called Quest and Dilla sticking out among party favorites and D'Bia$$i playing popular down South cuts.

It was a little awkward at first but the public proposal by some guy to his girl on stage turned out well, she said "yes," then they danced to Erykah Badu's "Love of My Life" — then every song after that (literally, well past the lights coming on. Employees cleaning up had to direct them towards the door).

The Bad: Technically, it wasn't a concert and Common had to be dying in that leather jacket he decided to perform in, then again, lots of fans in attendance had to be sweating bullets when they check the time and realized it was past 1 a.m. with no sight of the featured celeb.

The Verdict: For what it's worth, a pretty good performance. Wasn't exactly the Grammys or anything but the crowd was into it, Common was into and no one seemed to feel bamboozled afterwards.
