Film / The N Word / News More memories of Dennis Darrell

I am sad to write that Dennis Darrell of Reel Soul Films has passed away. A few weeks ago, I wrote an article on Charlotte's film community and had the opportunity to speak with Dennis about his thoughts. He was positive, uplifting and definitely felt that there was a film community here in Charlotte. Dennis' commitment to film was evident in the volume of films that he has screened in Charlotte and the filmmakers that he brought together on numerous occasions.
When I first moved to Charlotte, he welcomed me with open arms and was central to helping filmmakers navigate the city's precarious terrain. I was unaware of just how ill Dennis was and am pained to know that he is gone. I am happy that I had the opportunity to connect with him before he transitioned. As usual he was inspirational, enlightening and saw only the good in the Charlotte film community. His absence will definitely be felt in the film community, and he will be truly missed.

The N Word / News To Tiger Woods: Grow a pair

Why is Tiger Woods giving a press conference on cheating on his wife? Is he an elected official or a man of the cloth? Come on man. Fifteen minutes of Tiger beating up on himself is not good television. I don't give a damn about his dalliances with other women. That should be Elin's concern, not mine. Just play golf again. I do not think that his success on the golf course was due to his squeaky clean image -- more like his unparalleled skill set. Why are people mad? 85 percent of people in marriages in America cheat, so why do we have a different standard for him? Athletes and celebrities are not role models because they are as human and fallible as we are. To the world, I say, "Get a life." To Tiger, grow a pair.

The N Word / News Shut 'em down: A State of the Union review

President Obama's State of the Union address was brilliant and reminded many of us of why we voted for him in the first place.
He has good ideas, strong ideals and really is looking to make a difference in the lives of many with his presidency. The address was also a good reminder of the work that needs to be done to get folks to work with each other, instead of working against each other.
Crossing your arms and staring down the president in protest at a state of the union address? That demonstration visually showed the American people what our president is up against. It is impossible to effect change when you're trying to work with people who don't want it — Democrats and Republicans alike. President Obama will keep moving forward in spite of this foolishness, which is exactly what we need in this country.

The N Word / News Air rage at Delta, Continental

It has been announced that Delta and now Continental are increasing baggage fees. Perhaps they should focus more on helping to tighten up security at the airports and on the airlines and less on gouging customers. I guess it's not enough that we have to suffer through long lines, constant delays, canceled flights and the imminent threat of terror each time we fly, but now we have to worry about increased baggage fees. I don't know who runs airlines, but I would think that with all of the recent snafus, that the last thing they'd want to do is increase fees at this time. Yet another reason to drive if at possible.

The N Word / Pop Culture / News Tiger Woods looks more black on Vanity Fair cover

Well it seems that Vanity Fair has decided to put embattled Tiger Woods on the cover, only with photos taken four years ago by Annie Leibovitz. Surprise, surprise -- he looks like he's on a prison yard, bare chested and all. Like me, he looks better with his clothes on. At any rate, Leibovitz has done what she always does — take the black man back to his most primitive and primal image. Yet another plantation fantasy reminiscent of O.J.'s Time Magazine cover where he was actually darkened. Tiger is looking more "bl" than "cau" and "asian" in this one. He definitely looks darker in complexion and posture. Perhaps Leibovitz should focus less on perpetuating stereotypical images of EVERYONE and more on managing her money.

Atlanta and Charlotte have two of the most hotly contested mayoral races in the country, but nobody's paying attention. Too bad, because the role that race is playing in the outcome is major. While many people believe that the country has changed with the election of a Black president, some like me suggest that there may be a backlash, meted out on the local level. Let's see what happens.

Let me just say that if you ever stand by and watch a young woman get gang-raped by multiple people and don't do anything, you're a fucked up individual who should burn in hell. I'm not trying to mince words at all. I don't care if you're a teenager or not a police officer, the failure to do something to stop this travesty gives the entire world a black eye. I'm so tired of hearing all of the excuses, so please go somewhere and curl up and die.

Another model was fired allegedly for being a size 4. If this is true, this is yet another indicator of the ridiculous industry known as fashion. If a size 4 is fat then I guess that makes the average sized American woman (size 14) absurdly obese. It is a wonder to me why women continue to support an industry that lets us know at every opportunity that there is something wrong with us. We have to look like prepubescent boys or coat hangers in order to stay employed? Nothing feminine about that look at all.

It is a sad day indeed when a "robber" prays with a woman whom he is attempting to rob. When I first saw the footage, I thought it was crazy. After looking at it, I thought it was sad. This was clearly someone who was desperate and obviously not a robber -- just at his wits end and conscious enough to know that what he was doing was wrong. This is a reflection of what many people are experiencing and the lengths that they are going to stay afloat during this time.

OK, so David Letterman was running around with 20-year-old girls for years, before he was married. Unfortunately, one of them hooked up with a crackpot who decided to blackmail one of America's favorite late-night hosts. What is all of the hoopla about? It's David Letterman. Are you kidding? Look at him. Hopefully he's charming, because he's not the finest man on the planet, so I'm not surprised that he was banging his co-workers. Why are you? What business is it of ours? He was being blackmailed, so isn't he the victim?
