Lunch Break (6/10/16): Motorcyclist run over on Brookshire; Carowinds visitors left hanging

A man was killed on Brookshire Freeway last night after wrecking his motorcycle and being run over by another driver who was found to be impaired. Police said 49-year-old James Williams lost control of his motorcycle while driving inbound on Brookshire and laid it down, becoming separated from the bike in the process. While lying in the left lane, Williams was run over by a Ford F-150 driven by Anthony Houser. Houser did not stop at the scene but was followed by a witness driving behind him, who followed him into Gastonia. Gastonia police initiated a traffic stop and found Houser to be impaired. Houser has been charged with driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle and felony hit and run. (Ryan Pitkin, CL) 

Police are investigating after two homes were shot into overnight in Charlotte. The first shooting occurred at 1:30 a.m. at a Columbus Circle home near Freedom Drive, where officers say an unidentified suspect fired 20 shots. Three shots struck the home, but no injuries were reported. A second shooting occurred at 2 a.m. at a Sunset Boulevard home. Police say the home, and a car parked in the driveway, were shot at least ten times. Two adults and two children were in the home at the time, but were not injured. The overnight shootings occurred just a day after a south Charlotte home was shot at 60 times. (WSOC Staff) 

A 22-year-old man is facing a slew of charges after firing a shot at officers while trying to flee from a traffic stop just north of Uptown yesterday. Police say they tried to pull over a car allegedly driven by Jeremy Moody on Oaklawn Avenue yesterday just before 7:30 p.m. The car took off at a high rate of speed, and officers disengaged in the pursuit while following the route he had taken and broadcasting a vehicle description. The suspect then struck a light pole further down Oaklawn and ran from the vehicle. As officers pulled up to the scene, Moody fired a single shot in their direction but didn't strike anything. He was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit. Police announced this morning that Moody has been charged with felony flee to elude, two counts of assault on a government official, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, shooting within the city limits, possession of a stolen vehicle, driving while license revoked, resisting arrest, felony hit and run and a stop sign violation. Passengers spent hours stranded on multiple rides at Carowinds Thursday night after a blown transformer caused power outages throughout the park. The outages began at around 8 p.m., and caused popular rides like WindSeeker (which dangles passengers 301-feet over the park in suspended swings) and Fury 325 (a 325-foot giga-coaster) to stop abruptly, trapping riders on-board. Fire and medic crews were on site as park employees had to manually lower the rides. All passengers had been safely evacuated by 11 p.m. and Duke Energy worked overnight to restore power, but several rides remained closed when the park re-opened this morning. (WBTV Web Staff)
