Lunch Break (5/13/16): Obama administration to issue decree to country's public schools regarding transgender discrimination

The Obama administration is expected to issue a directive to every public school district in the country today ordering them to allow transgender students to use the restroom of the gender they identify with. The decree is not a lawful order, but implies that not following along could result in lawsuits or the loss of federal aid. (Julie Hirschfield Davis & Matt Apuzzo, New York Times) This action was presumably spurred by the upcoming court battle between the U.S. government and the state of North Carolina regarding House Bill 2, which ordered everyone to use the restroom of the gender listed on their birth certificate, among other things. The latest news in regards to HB2 is that the Obama administration announced yesterday that it will not cut federal education funding to the state while the issue is battled out in court. Police are searching for the people who abandoned two small children in two separate spots in Charlotte yesterday. A girl believed to be 2 years old (right) and a boy believed to be about 4 months old (left) were found near different CMPD stations yesterday. Police at first looked for public assistance in identifying the children but announced this morning that the children have been identified. The children were evaluated at CMC Main as a precaution and are said to be in good health. Police are still investigating this case and are presumably looking for the children's parents, although officials have not said who they believe to be responsible. (Ryan Pitkin)

A 9-year-old girl missing for more than a week was found yesterday by two men searching the backwoods of northeastern Tennessee after hearing her story in the news. Police say Donnie Lawson and Roger Carpenter came across Carlie Marie Trent and her uncle, Gary Simpson, in Hawkins County. One man held a gun on Simpson while the other went to call for help. Officials said it did not appear Trent was harmed. Simpson has been charged with especially aggravated kidnapping and may face further charges according to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesperson. (Associated Press via WSOC)

A man who stole a school bus from Cannon School in Concord early this morning and led police on a chase that ended in Davidson County told police that God must have put the bus there for him to take "because he needed to get out of there." Despite God's wishes, 49-year-old Steven Karambells was charged with stealing a vehicle, felony speeding to elude arrest, reckless driving, attempting to assault a government official and failing to stop for blue lights and siren.
