When José Galvez was 10 years old, he wandered into Arizona Daily Star with a shoeshine box looking for work. Years later, the shoeshine boy transformed into a pioneering photographer for the Latino community - he even picked up a Pulitzer Prize for a Los Angeles Times project that involved documenting Latino life in California.

The award-winning photographer and journalist's work on Latinos' struggles for civil rights and advancement continues to shine through on black and white film. His shots have appeared across the United States and abroad. But his latest endeavors have brought him to Charlotte for an exhibit, Al Norte al Norte at Beatties Ford Road Library and for appearances at Con A De Arte (Spanish for "A is for Art").

The exhibit - which runs though June 30 - highlights Latino Americans and the economic impact of immigrant businesses, as well as the group's social, political and cultural impact. As part of ArtSí Charlotte’s Con A De Arte, Galvez will speak at two events, June 9-10.

In it's 12th year, Con A De Arte celebrates Latino art and culture through lectures, visual arts and performances. This year's festivities will also include appearances from multi-disciplinary artists Carlos Cruz and Rocio González, as well as presentations from artist's Luis Ardila, Zaire Kacz, Ivan Toth Depeña and Al Torres.
