First Drip (6/30/15): Neighbors rally for local artist hit by drunk driver

Posted By on Tue, Jun 30, 2015 at 10:09 AM

Neighbors are rallying to support Charlotte artist Joe Borruso after he was struck by a drunk driver on Parkwood Avenue near Plaza Midwood on Sunday evening. Borruso was reportedly moving something across the street on a dolly when he was struck by Evan Hager, who was driving drunk. Borruso's friend said he has lost part of his left leg, suffered multiple spinal injuries and is in a medically induced coma. Friends have set up a fundraiser on YouCaring to donate to his recovery fund.

Kerr Putney was sworn in as Chief of CMPD in front of a packed house on Monday morning, surrounded by family members. Putney is replacing Rodney Monroe, who will retire tomorrow. Putney has been with the department from more than 20 years and is the first internally selected Chief in CMPD history.

A group of residents and business leaders from Lake Norman are traveling to Raleigh by bus today to voice their opposition to the proposed toll lanes along Interstate 77. The group will meet with legislators and deliver petitions from hundreds of Lake Norman businesses and resolutions from the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners and the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce. A press conference is scheduled to take place at 12:30 p.m. at the Legislative Building.

A 26-year-old man was killed in a car accident that shut down Interstate 85 near Sugar Creek Road for hours last night. Police said Tramaine Walters blew a tire and ran into another car, causing it to overturn. Walters was reportedly killed when his car hit a barrier and the driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The wreck happened at about 7:30 p.m. and the interstate was shut down in that street until about 10 p.m.

A Belmont woman who has been missing for nearly two weeks is reported to be fine after she contacted police and said she would be returning home today. Debra Pittman has reportedly been missing since June 18, and called authorities to say she was safe on Monday but refused to give them her location. Police said they will not cancel the missing person report until they interview her in person to make sure she is in good health.

Portraits of Plaza Midwood Pride

Posted By on Mon, Jun 29, 2015 at 11:36 AM

Friday's Supreme Court decision to recognize same-sex marriages nationwide set off celebrations of LGBT Pride throughout the country. One celebration, organized by Charlotte Pride, turned into an impromptu block party at Pizza Peel in the heart of Plaza Midwood. Families both straight and gay, elected officials, those running for office and local business owners were among those who showed up to support the LGBT community and celebrate the court's 5-4 decision.

First Drip (6/29/15): Kerr Putney to be sworn in as new Chief of Police

Posted By on Mon, Jun 29, 2015 at 9:44 AM

Deputy Chief Kerr Putney will be sworn in as CMPD Chief of Police during a ceremony this morning. Putney is replacing Rodney Monroe, who will retire on Wednesday after a seven-year tenure. CMPD did not carry out a nationwide search and chose Putney out of five internal candidates.

Duke Energy has called plans from environmental advocacy group NC WARN to sell solar power to a Greensboro church "unlawful," but plans to connect the 5.2 megawatt installation to the grid. NC WARN has asked the North Carolina Utilities Commission to make a declaratory ruling on the legality of its plan to sell the Faith Community Church power at 5 cents per kilowatt hour, about half of Duke's rate.

A bill moving through the state legislature would restrict the North Carolina Department of Transportation from eliminating a lane of traffic to add bike lanes, upsetting local cycling advocates. "Road diets," which make room for alternative transportation, have become popular throughout the country in recent years. House Bill 44 would prohibit the narrowing of state-operated roads if the daily traffic count exceeds 20,000 vehicles.

A Charlotte activist removed the Confederate flag from its spot near the state Capitol in Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday morning. Bree Newsome was arrested after climbing down the flagpole, and the flag was put back up about 45 minutes later. James Tyson, also from Charlotte, was arrested with Newsome and both were charged with defacing monuments on state Capitol grounds, which is punishable by fines up to $5,000 and three years in prison.

Authorities said they recaptured escaped inmate Kristopher McNeil near the Davidson/Forsyth county line overnight. McNeil, 29. is serving a sentence for second-degree murder at Davidson County Jail. A kitchen worker at the jail was also arrested for helping him escape.

First Drip (6/26/15): Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage in all 50 states

Posted By on Fri, Jun 26, 2015 at 10:24 AM

Moments before this was posted, the Supreme Court voted that same-sex couples have the right to marry in all 50 states in a 5 to 4 vote.

The Charlotte Hornets drafted 7-foot-tall center Frank Kaminsky from the University of Wisconsin with the ninth pick of last night's NBA Draft. Kaminsky averaged 18.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last year with the Badgers. Although Kaminsky won multiple awards as a senior, including the Wooden and Naismith awards, the Hornets took a lot of flak from social media for not taking Duke's Justise Winslow, whom many believe to be a better player.

Thousands of people are expected to attend Rev. Clementa Pinckney's funeral in Charleston today. President Barack Obama will deliver the eulogy for the S.C. state senator, who was killed during a mass shooting at AME Emanuel Church on June 17. First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are also expected to attend the service, which begins at 11 a.m.

There has been a possible break in the case of a Charlotte woman who went missing in 1997 in California. Kristen Modaferri was 18 years old when she disappeared after finishing her shift at a coffeehouse in San Francisco. Eighteen years later, a private investigator's cadaver dog is believed to have picked up a scent of human remains at her former Oakland home. Kristen's father, Bob Modaferri, still lives in Charlotte with her mother. On Thursday, Bob said there are "100 percent" human remains in the home.

Neighbors of the Allen Steam Station in Gaston County have demanded that Duke Energy remove coal ash from the multiple ponds near their homes that have made their well water undrinkable. A plan announced this week by Duke to remove coal ash from 30 unlined ponds across the state did not include Allen Steam Station, which has angered residents. In April, residents around Allen Steam Station received letters telling them not to drink their water after high levels of heavy metal contaminants were found in it. Duke has suggested the poisoning is happening naturally.
