Goodwill plans to build a $20 million job-readiness facility on Wilkinson Boulevard that will offer job training and placement services, child care, a cafe and satellite offices for other nonprofits that help the unemployed. Most of the money to build the campus has been raised, though a fundraiser for additional funds kicks off this week. In all, Goodwill CEO hopes to serve 10,400 people in its first year, or about 23 percent more than it currently serves.

Maggie Daniels, the 31-year-old Newton high school guidance counselor, died of strangulation. The city's police also revealed that there were signs of a struggle in her apartment, where she was found. If found guilty of first degree murder, her accused killer, Sharman Odom, faces the death penalty.

"The Eiler and Bald Fires, sparked by lightning, began within a day of each other in Lassen National Forest and have destroyed more than 100 square miles of drought-stricken brush with unusual ferocity. 'Trees were just exploding,' said Dennis Hoffman who sought shelter at a local school. 'It was like a big monster — just unbelievable, how bad it was.'"
