Along with adjusting to a foreign culture, learning a new language, working twice as hard in school or at work to catch up or make ends meet and trying to build a support system from scratch - all in the name of making a better life for themselves and their families - immigrants to the U.S. also have to deal with our cruel justice system.

In April, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police set up a checkpoint on the eastside, where many immigrants work and live. When youth members of the Latin American Coalition's United 4 The Dream program heard about the checkpoint, where police ask for identification, they showed up and went up and down the line of waiting cars, informing anyone without an ID they could be detained.

United 4 The Dream's Mary Espinoza told Hola Noticias that officers told her to stop because she was "interfering with their work."

United members eventually requested and were granted a meeting with CMPD to discuss checkpoints.

"[Chief Rodney Monroe] expressed a genuine interest in knowing how CMPD can work with the immigrant community to prevent crime, build trust, and make sure victims of crime have access to U-visas," said Lacey Williams, advocacy director at the Latin American Coalition, in a release. "Chief Monroe especially wants his department out of the immigration enforcement business."

The meeting is scheduled for June 18, 6 p.m., at the Independence Regional Library, 6000 Conference Drive.
