City Council voted Monday to move forward with a study of a Duke Energy proposal that would transport 4 million tons of coal ash from Riverbend Steam Station to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The coal ash would be repurposed into fill material, possibly for a new runway.

Led by state NAACP President William Barber, a crowd of about 250 gathered outside an event at Statesville's Chamber of Commerce to protest the featured guest, Gov. Pat McCrory. The Moral Monday event called attention to voting laws passed by the General Assembly. Unlike most Moral Mondays in Raleigh, organizers sought a protest permit to avoid any arrests.

More than half of the 53 countries participating in the Nuclear Security Summit, in The Hague, "pledged to turn international guidelines on nuclear security into national laws." The measure aims to restrict access to nuclear materials by terrorists.

It's probably the last building anyone should mess with. Police in New York have arrested four men who performed a base-jump stunt from atop One World Trade Center in September. They gained access to the area through a hole in the security fence. One of the men was a construction worker on the rebuilding project.
