The Hot Gates at Snug Harbor tonight (6/29/13)

Posted By on Sat, Jun 29, 2013 at 8:49 AM

THE HOT GATES
Led by Charlotte-based musician Jason Scavone, The Hot Gates offers listeners an opportunity to experience the sounds of commercial pop/rock, with a sort of intimacy that's often lost in the mainstream. Unlike many of today's prominent pop artists, Scavone has managed not to restrict his craft to one particular niche within the genre. Rather, under The Hot Gates, Scavone experiments with Americana-esque guitar, infectious pop choruses and the classic notes of piano, to create something raw and new. By evading the likes of mainstream producers, Scavone maintains his authenticity on The Hot Gates' debut album, Ride it Out, released August of last year. Though you won't find Scavone's songs topping charts (yet), his talent for creating catchy, radio-friendly pop tracks has led to features on a Starbucks compilation CD and helped The Hot Gates gain notice within the Charlotte music scene. With Ancient Cities. $5. June 29, 10 p.m. Snug Harbor, 1228 Gordon St.

Posted By on Fri, Jun 28, 2013 at 10:36 AM

Editor's note: In this series, local author David Aaron Moore answers reader-submitted questions about unusual, noteworthy or historic people, places and things in Charlotte. Submit inquires to davidaaronmoore@gmail.com.

Charlotte's westside has always had somewhat of a bad reputation, though I've never understood why. To make matters more confusing I've noticed a lot of new development in the area, and West Morehead has suddenly become hip. What is that side of town's back story, and why is it suddenly popular? - Richard Long, Charlotte

There Was A Time: Rock & Roll in the 1960s in Charlotte, and North Carolina Book Release Party at the Neighborhood Theatre tonight (6/28/13)

Posted By on Fri, Jun 28, 2013 at 8:35 AM

THERE WAS A TIME: ROCK & ROLL IN THE 1960S IN CHARLOTTE, AND NORTH CAROLINA BOOK RELEASE PARTY
Mannish Boys singer/guitarist Jacob Berger and Charlotte photographer/writer Daniel Coston have teamed up for a book that tells the story of the 1960s Charlotte, and regional, music scene. The book reads like a Q&A, with Coston and Berger providing narration behind the storytelling of a variety of area musicians including Don Dixon, Mitch Easter and members of Paragons, Grifs, Stowaways and more. So, what better way to celebrate the book's release than with a concert by some of the bands discussed in the book? It's a great chance to relive the old days of Charlotte's rock scene or simply hear "how it used to be." With The Good, Bad & The Ugly, The Young Ages, Bobby Donaldson & The Ravens, Abbadons and The Mannish Boys. $15. June 28, 8 p.m. Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. 704-942-7997.
