Les Rhinocéros

The Washington D.C.-based combo composes with electronic instruments as well as just about anything else you can think of - percussion, guitars, trombone, piano, samplers, toys - to create an amalgam of eclectic, experimental music. The effusive noise, soothing one moment and abrasive the next, can be cathartic for sound seekers, but can also just as quickly clear out a room. There's a method and a learned craft to their mad inventiveness and the spastic tonal shifts can be a refreshing dose of musical exploration. It's a mix of skronk jazz, electro noise, Eastern meditative sounds, minimalist pop and even psychedelic meandering. Their new recording, Les Rhinocéros II, on the avant-garde label Tzadik, hits the streets in mid-May. Also on the bill are Blossoms and Great Architect. $5-$9. March 24, 9 p.m. The Milestone, 3400 Tuckaseegee Road. 704-398-0472.
