Cloudeater

Hovering like a low pressure zone over the intersection of R&B, electronica, hip-hop and Brit-pop, Atlanta's Cloudeater never quite settles into anything as conventional as genre. In a voice pitched midway between John Legend's smoothness and Justin Timberlake's falsetto, front man Sam Dew sings about everyday nagging doubts, including the anxiety that accompanies falling in love. Despite the synths and samples, Cloudeater never forgets to swing, locking into a sinister narcotic groove suggesting Suicide's Alan Vega at an electro lounge. The ghosts of PIL and New Wave minimalist The Normal also hover at the edges of the septet's subtle R&B guitar, throbbing techno bass and swoony earworm melodies. Just when you have Cloudeater pegged as moody electro, washes of metal, sludge and grime clean the palate. With Little Bull Lee, Miami Dice. $5. Jan. 25, 10 p.m. Snug Harbor, 1228 Gordon St. 704-333-9799.
