There’s a lot going on in Charlotte with the Democratic National Convention just around the corner, and some of the facelifts around town are easy to spot. Less apparent are the art community’s preparations behind the scenes to culturally engage our thousands of visitors.
The local art community is ready to garner national attention. With the new museums in the Wells Fargo Cultural Campus, the very generous Arts and Science Council and the increasingly relevant McColl Center, it would be hard for the national arts scene to overlook the Queen City.
A federal judge has given former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, who was convicted of corruption charges in 2006, permission to attend the Democratic National Convention.
Here are the five best events going down in Charlotte and the surrounding area today, August 30, 2012 as selected by the folks at Creative Loafing.

The rhetoric about rape coming from the GOP is terrifying, and Ann Romney's plea to women this week only makes things worse.
Last week, Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan referred to rape as a “method of conception” in an interview with a Roanoke, Va., television station. Days earlier, Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., made a ridiculous statement about reproductive abilities essentially shutting down during rape.
From Akin’s notorious remarks about “legitimate” rapes, to Senate candidate Tom Smith likening it to having a baby out of wedlock, to this more subtle trivialization from the vice presidential candidate, it appears all attempts are being made to categorize rape somewhere between an unfortunate incident and a figment of womens’ imaginations.
Steve Kerrigan said he isn’t paying much attention to the Republican National Convention happening this week in Tampa. Perhaps the Democratic National Convention Committee CEO is catching “snippets” here and there. But when I spoke with him on Wednesday, one of a parade of journalists hearing his last-minute thoughts and anxieties about Charlotte’s turn in the spotlight, it was clear he had some thoughts on the difference between the two.
“There isn’t one event planned by the convention that’s open to the public” in Tampa, he said.

The Republican National Convention features some party stars as speakers, including N.J. Gov. Chris Christie, and also officially introduced Ann Romney, Mitt Romney's wife, to America. Her husband secured enough delegate votes to become the party's official nominee. (Photos by Joeff Davis, of our sister paper Creative Loafing Atlanta)
