Wells Fargo's latest fee is bad for business

Posted By on Thu, Jun 28, 2012 at 4:22 PM

This week Wells Fargo surprised customers who maintain free checking accounts.

The San Francisco-based bank sent notice that it'd be charging new monthly fees ranging from $5-$12 to customers who do not maintain a minimum daily balance in the thousands or have a direct deposit of $500 each month.

DNC 2012 Notebook: A tale of two press ops

Posted By on Thu, Jun 28, 2012 at 10:41 AM

After the kind of Tuesday Dan Murrey had, he needed Wednesday.

Dan Murrey
  • Dan Murrey

He looked relaxed as he joined 75 volunteers on humpday at the Levine Children's Hospital, one of many convention staffers, credit union crew and National Journal group returning for the rooftop playground project that will be unveiled during convention week. It's part of the legacy to leave something behind in the convention cities of Charlotte and Tampa.

It was a change from Tuesday, when Democrats announced they had decided to move their Labor Day "Carolina Fest 2012" from Charlotte Motor Speedway to uptown. To answer questions about what the move would mean for security, transportation and protesters - and how the late change would affect arrangements already begun by Concord officials - Murrey, chairman of the DNC host committee, cited "logistics" and moving delegates busy with caucus meetings from uptown as reasons for the switch.

Travel + Tech = Wayfaring Tech Nomad

Posted By on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 12:00 PM

Creative Loafing has a new blog coming. Mine!

Wayfaring Tech Nomad will be about three things: Travel, tech and, occasionally, the intersection of the two.

In April, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to go on a trip to Doha, Qatar and bring everyone along with me. Now, I'm off to Hong Kong in July. The experience will be the same: a look at the world through a Charlottean's eyes. While I'm not traveling, and sometimes when I am, I'll be keeping everyone up to date on the cool happenings with the tech scene, especially as it pertains to our beautiful city.

Speaking of, expect neat things like this panorama, which is what I'm shooting in the above video, and other little vignettes from all kinds of cool places all over the world. (Use your mouse and click to move the panorama along.)

So, welcome to the adventure! Hong Kong will mark the first Wayfaring Tech Nomad posts and begins on July 3!

LOL: Comedy in the Q.C.

Posted By on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 5:33 PM

Listed below is a roundup of CL's top picks for comedy shows in Charlotte this week. Hopefully, they keep you entertained and, more importantly, laughing out loud.

You may not have heard of the six comics taking to the stage at the Almost Famous Comedy Show, but that doesn't mean they won't make you laugh. These rising talents have been tweaking their stand-up acts for the past few months, leading up to tonight's final competition. The showcase - created by comedian Blayr Nias - is for a good cause, too. Folks are encouraged to bring canned goods and non-perishable items for donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. $10. June 26, 8 p.m. The Comedy Zone Charlotte at N.C. Music Factory, 900 N.C. Music Factory Blvd., Suite B3. 980-321-4702. www.cltcomedyzone.com.

Drag star, Miss Coco Peru brings her "There Comes A Time" show to Duke Energy Theater, as a part of this weeks continuing Queen's Fab Fest. Peru talks about pretty much whatever she feels like and puts silly twists onto everyday life experiences. $32-$75. June 27, 8 p.m. Duke Energy Theater, 345 N. College St. 704-372-1000. www.blumenthalarts.org.

LavellCrawford.jpg

We aren't going to sugar-coat obesity, so let's get straight to the point: Lavell Crawford is fat. The comedian, who ranked second place (next to winner Jon Reep of Hickory, N.C.) on season five of NBC's Last Comic Standing, doesn't bother denying his frequent feeding frenzies. His act addresses being a "big guy in a skinny man's world" - though with other giants like Ralphie May and Gabriel Iglesias shaking the comic front, we beg to differ. Crawford shares stories about getting fired from a fast food restaurant when burgers went missing and the ridicule of ordering family-sized meals alone at fried chicken restaurants, where he's asked "For here or to go?" He also picks fun at his fam and other randomness not related to food. But in the end, it's the fat jokes that prevail. $25-$30. June 28, 8 p.m.; June 29-30, 8 p.m. & 10:15 p.m. The Comedy Zone Charlotte at N.C. Music Factory, 900 N.C. Music Factory Blvd., Suite B3. 980-321-4702. www.cltcomedyzone.com.

Dunces of the Week: Conservative Supreme Court justices

Posted By on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 4:10 PM

It's been said that a president is a glorified spokesman, navigating the country's discussion in his favor while trying hard to hide his faults.

But today proved how relevant the presidential powers can be when the five Reagan, Bush and Bush Jr. Supreme Court nominees "reversed a decision of the Montana Supreme Court that had refused to allow the Citizens United decision," according to The New York Times. The 2010 landmark decision prohibited limiting independent political spending by corporations and unions. The Times wrote:
