A Tuna Christmas
Carolina Actors Studio Theatre
CAST has staged performances of its seasonal A Tuna Christmas for the past four years and for good reason: The comedy paints the holiday picture in a wacky way. Two actors play more than 21 characters, all of whom are experiencing Christmas Eve chaos in the “third smallest town in Texas.” Radio personalities Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie are reporting on the Yuletide happenings — including the vandalism of the town’s annual lawn displays and a production of A Christmas Carol that’s about to get scrooged (er, screwed) due to unpaid electric bills. All these plot twists, and there’s still room for one more shocker: Aliens!

• Special Event For those of you who don’t quite find the visuals of a live classical concert pleasing comes a twisted action-oriented alternative. Charlotte Symphony’s Cirque de la Symphonie Acrobatics mixes a full symphony (conducted by Jacomo Rafael Bairos) with limber aerial artists willing to tumble, flip and dangle in mid-air for the sake of entertainment. • Art Who doesn’t love variety, especially when it comes to art? During the closing reception for Charlotte Artery’s fall exhibit Momentum, folks can take a final glimpse at new works — by Julie Benda, Sharon Dowell, Teresa Hollmeyer , Paul Keysar, Bev Nagy, Isaac Payne, Terry Shipley, Natalie Abrams, Diane Pike, and Pamela Winegard — in multiple mediums and styles represented. Daniel Tosh

Comedian Daniel Tosh, known best for his mocking commentary on Comedy Central’s Tosh.O, released a CD/DVD called Happy Thoughts earlier this year. He also disclosed plans to end his career on his 38th birthday — which falls on May 29, 2013. At the bottom of his website, a countdown, titled “Daniel’s Groundhog Day Ends,” ticks away. Whether you buy into the propaganda or not, you have to give Tosh kudos for either sharing such an intricate plan (for his possible death or a rich early retirement) or taking some of us for fools. True fans won’t opt out on seeing him when he performs — not one, but two — shows at Ovens Auditorium. Better now, than never.

• Dance Caroline Calouche & Co. is putting a modern retro spin to a seasonal classic. The troupe’s Clara’s Trip: A Nutcracker Story is far from traditional performances of the holiday favorite. • Music Consisting of veteran multi-instrumentalists, Toneblazers pluck warmly knitted roots and acoustic songs touching on bluegrass, swing, folk and blues. This is music that’s at home on a hot front-porch afternoon or a mellow late night in a watering hole. They are performing as part of the Little Kings Records showcase at Neighborhood Theatre. Million Dollar Quartet

December 4, 1956 was a historic day at Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. Mostly by chance, some of the best known rock 'n' roll icons - Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins - wandered into the recording playground. An unexpected jam session between them, resulted in rollicking sensation. Broadway's powerful musical Million Dollar Quartet is inspired by the true story and relives the magic of the momentous sounds caught on tape.

• Special Event Walking by The Ritz-Carlton’s life-sized Gingerbread House, may be too tempting for folks who can’t control their urges to snatch pieces of candy. Just remember the ol’ “Don’t touch anything!” commands you probably heard as a child and think of it as art, rather than food. The creative structure (12 feet high, 14 feet wide and 10 feet deep) was architect-designed and culinary concocted by pastry chefs. Its components — 350 pounds of sugar, 300 pounds of floor, 100 eggs, four pounds of baking soda and many more mounds of ingredients — must have made for a lengthy visit at the grocery store. Needless to say, this is one holiday decoration you shouldn’t miss seeing (not eating). Those with a lingering sweet tooth can find satisfaction in the hotel’s new addition, Bar Cocoa. More...

• Music It’s impossible to talk about the West coast’s hip-hop revival without mentioning Cali trio, Pac Div. From their early days as Pacific Division, they’ve rocked amazing beats and spit honest lyrics, painting an updated picture of the lifestyle lived the first generation to come up in the heyday of Cali’s assault on the mainstream. After some monster mix tape releases, the group released their debut album The Div earlier this month. Mac Miller headlines a week after being the first indie artist to debut at No. 1 in nearly two decades, Odd Future’s Casey Veggies joins. More...
