Charlotte, NC — The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department invites individuals and groups to “Hike for Habitats” at Reedy Creek Nature Center on Saturday, March 26, 2011, 10 a.m. – noon. The event serves as a fundraiser with all proceeds going toward a scholarship fund to pay for nature programs and field trips for underprivileged youth in the Charlotte area.

There will be guided hikes of varying distance beginning at 10 a.m. Participants may come for any part, or all of the two-hour event. All ages and hiking abilities are welcome. Join us after the hikes to explore some of the activities your money is supporting.

This is a great opportunity to meet new people, enjoy one of the wonderful green spaces that Mecklenburg County has to offer, and give a child an opportunity to connect with nature.

Register through E-Parks or call Reedy Creek Nature Center at 704-598-8867. The entry fee is $10/adults, $5/children and free for ages 5 and under. Cash or check only; please make checks payable to Partners for Parks. All paying participants will receive a free water bottle. Participants who raise a minimum of $25 will receive a reusable tote bag. Top fundraisers will be entered to win great prizes!

Mecklenburg County has 21 nature preserves covering about 6,870 acres which provide habitat to many types of animals and native plants. Reedy Creek Nature Preserve protects 737 acres of natural, forested habitat. There are over ten miles of hiking trails in the nature preserve for the outdoor enthusiast, giving visitors the opportunity to explore a variety of terrains while enjoying scenic views of small lakes, forests, fields, streams and wildlife.
