The ongoing weirdness of Mark Sanford

Jenny Sanford, S.C. guvnah Mark Sanford’s estranged wife, told Barbara Walters that before they were married, Marco the Latin Lover insisted that a clause promising fidelity be taken out of their wedding vows. In an interview to be aired Friday on ABC, Ms. Sanford says the future Appalachian Trail hiker was adamant about taking out the promise of fidelity. She said their marriage has been “a leap of faith.” As the Talking Points Memo site headline put it, however, “Um, that was a red flag.” Not a red flag the young Wall Street exec was able to see, apparently.

Anyone who has followed Sanford’s career can’t help but noticing some, er, quirks in his character. “Quirks,” as in “self-absorbed jerk who lives in his head and has nearly zero empathy with anyone else.” And don’t forget the general cluelessness and hypocrisy of Sanford presenting himself as a strong advocate of “family values” – or being one of the strongest advocates for impeaching Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky mess. On top of that, Sanford takes it upon himself to tell other people, namely gays and lesbians, whether it’s morally OK for them to marry or not. And to think some conservatives wanted this piece of work to run for president.
