Police issued more than 6,000 citations to motorists in Mecklenburg County during Operation Slow Down, an effort to curb speeding and aggressive driving in North Carolina, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The tickets were issued between Nov. 16-29, and Mecklenburg was second only to Wake County, where more than 7,000 citations were issued, state officials say.

Statewide, according to the DOT, more than 31,000 motorists received citations for speeding during the campaign. In all, more than 83,000 traffic and criminal citations were issued.

The total in Mecklenburg County was 6,110, including nearly 2,000 for speeding. DWI citations were issued in 154 cases, police say. They conducted 30 checkpoints during the two-week campaign.
