The only thing people seem concerned about is noise and traffic. Anyone consider the vast amounts of fossil fuels that will be burned to entertain the masses?

Despite some concern from neighbors about noise and traffic, Charlotte City Council is expected to rezone 135.3 acres tonight for a project that will transform the Metrolina Tradeshow Expo grounds and its historic dirt racetrack that has sat on blocks for years.

If all goes as planned, the Metrolina Speedway – where Dale Earnhardt Sr. won his first race on asphalt – will be replaced by the Metrolina Speed and Sports Center, a $50 million speed and amateur sports complex that will include a 40,000-square-foot facility with retail and rooftop skateboard park, a 200-room hotel and a banked race track and karting facility.

The popular flea market would continue on the site.

The project would create 150 jobs, says Simon Weber, president of the developer, Speedway Investment Group of Mooresville.

“There are concerns from neighbors adjacent to the project, but in my opinion the advantages outweigh the disadvantages with this project,” Charlotte Mayor Pro tem Susan Burgess said Sunday. “The Derita section of north Charlotte really needs an economic boost, and a sports entertainment complex will offer just that.”

The concerns come from neighbors within earshot of the proposed complex. Yet most of Derita appears to be behind it.
