Waiting for news on the Charlotte Roller Girls? Well, here ya go. Charlotte Roller Girls have announced the kick off of its Intra-League Championship. They've added a third team (Fraid Knots) to the mix too. Read the press release below for more information on the teams and upcoming bouts.
Charlotte, N.C. (June 20, 2009) - Throughout the 2009 season, followers of the Charlotte Roller Girls have come in droves to witness Emmylou Harass, Courther Pounder, Drew FearMEmore and the rest destroy their competition. Wouldnt it be exciting to see Charlottes skaters compete head-to-head? Starting on July 19, fans will have that chance.The Charlotte Roller Girls will kick off its 2009 intra-league season with three qualifying bouts before closing out its home season with the championship bout in September. The intra-league championship is a serious competition which allows all of Charlottes active skaters to bout at its home venue the Grady Cole Center.
All of us look forward to our intra-league season, said Charlotte Roller Girls president Lucy Kwimpent (Cress Barnes). Every skater gets the chance to strut her stuff in front of the home crowd. The fans love it too because they are guaranteed to see their favorite skater at least twice throughout the championship. We take these bouts very seriously so fans should expect nothing but the finest roller derby action.
Competing in the championship rounds will be Charlottes three intra-league teams, the Blockem Sockem Rollers, Cockpit Candies and introducing its newest team, the Fraid Knots. Each season, the roster for each team is determined. The roster remains in place throughout the season but will change the following year.
The Blockem Sockem Rollers are captained by Rosie Cheeks and Puncher P. Hole. The team, which has a derby styled boxing theme, includes veterans Jack the Manic, Pollyannarchy and Devlin Syder and newcomers Shocker Khan and Pinkie TuscIDAREYA.
Amy Fister and Pamela Ander-slam are the captains for the Cockpit Candies. With a sassy flight attendant theme, the team includes veterans Hellin Felon, BoToxic Bruzher and Optimus Fine as well as newcomers Scarlett A. Sassin and Booty Boop.
With so many active skaters, Charlotte formed a third team, dubbed the Fraid Knots. The teams official unveiling, including theme, uniforms and roster, will take place on July 10 at the Charlotte Roller Girls Intra-league Rollout Bash held at the Dilworth Neighborhood Grille. Fans are encouraged to attend this free event, which kicks off at 9:00 p.m.
Our newest team, the Fraid Knots, is a great example of the popularity and continued growth of the Charlotte Roller Girls, continued Lucy Kwipment. Despite limited mainstream recognition, our sport continues to grow. This modern version of roller derby is still relatively new and weve only seen the tip of the iceberg. The biggest surge is yet to come
The first qualifying bout, held on July 19, will feature the Blockem Sockem Rollers and the Cockpit Candies. On August 9, the Blockem Sockem Rollers battle the Fraid Knots and on August 30 the Fraid Knots take on the Cockpit Candies. The two teams with the best records will face off in the championship bout on September 12.
At each bout, doors open at 5:15 p.m. with the first whistle at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can and be purchased in advance for $10 at www.charlotterollergirls.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $14.
Organized in 2006, the Charlotte Roller Girls are an all-female flat track roller derby league formed with the purpose of promoting the sport of roller derby and enriching the Charlotte community. It is a not-for-profit organization that donates its time and a portion of bout proceeds to local charitable causes. It holds it home bouts at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte and its 2009 season runs from February through October.
