Cliffside: The coal battle rages on

Regulators are willing to hear NC WARN's Cliffside Coal Plant Steam Station complaints (again), but that hasn't meant anything in the past.

State regulators have agreed to hear the N.C. Waste Awareness and Reduction Network’s latest challenge to the proposed $2.4 billion expansion at Duke Energy Carolinas’ Cliffside coal plant.

The environmental group contends in a filing May 5 that the new, 825-megawatt coal unit is unnecessary. It argues lagging growth in demand and a state mandate for increased use of renewable energy sources eliminate the need for it.

N.C. WARN has asked the commission to revoke its March 2007 order approving construction of the plant.

The commission issued an order Wednesday calling for interested parties to file a response by June 12.
