Get Smart: Thanks to cable’s Nick at Nite, I spent many a long hour watching Maxwell Smart talking into a shoe phone and be rescued by Agent 99 – despite the fact that I was born in the ’80s. Even if I didn’t have fond childhood memories of the show, I’d be all about catching funnyman Steve Carrell (hilarious in his roles in The Daily Show, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and hottie Ann Hathaway (The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada) play super spies. Be smart and catch a screening early: this one is bound to bring a packed house. Local theaters. www.charlotte.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Film. Find more in Film.

Song of Water: Here’s an eclectic musical ensemble featuring multiple instruments with multiple players. Songs of Water take detours to the musical realms of the Middle East and Asia while collecting multi-cultural sounds along the way with an improv-driven weave of jazz, acoustic, classical and world music. The end result is often gorgeous and contemplative where the compositions are further perked with percussive intonations. With Zoumana Diabate. The Evening Muse. www.theeveningmuse.com. Yippie ki-yay: The Main Library’s annual Summer Film Series is back, this time riding tall in the saddle. This year’s program is Once Upon a Time in the West: Great Hollywood* Westerns (* and one Italian), offering 11 oaters over the course of nine Sundays. This week’s installment is a double feature: Go West and The Great Train Robbery. The 1925 film Go West was directed by Buster Keaton, and tells the story about a cowboy named Friendless (Keaton again) and a dangerous cattle ride. The Great Train Robbery (1903) was inspired by a real-life 1900’s train robbery and featured one of the earliest examples of a movie as a means to tell a narrative story. And for added measure, it also stands as an early example of on-screen notoriety, as the moment when a cowboy aims his gun directly at the camera and fires freaked out many moviegoers, who, not quite comprehending this newfangled innovation, thought that they were about to get shot themselves.
