Uptown ABC store nixed: Plans for a new liquor store on West Trade street in Uptown have been scrapped by the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. One of the factoring concerns was the proximity of the location to student housing for Johnson & Wales University.

Carter set to meet with Hamas officials in Egypt: Former President Jimmy Carter plans to meet with two senior Hamas officials in an effort, he says, to help resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The U.S. and Israeli governments say doing so runs counter to their policies of not negotiating with terrorists (Israel, the United States and European Union consider Hamas to be a terrorist organization).

Pope laments U.S. 'injustices' to blacks, Indians: Pope Benedict XVI celebrated the first public Mass of his U.S. pilgrimage today at Washington Nationals Stadium. He praised America as a land of hope and promises, but said that the nation fell short in fulfilling those promises to the Native Americans and "those brought her forcibly from Africa as slaves."
