MLK was to be in Charlotte, but then...: On April 4, what we now know as Martin Luther King Jr.'s day of assassination, may not have been if everything went according to plan. On April 4, 1968, MLK was supposed to be helping his fellow civil rights advocate and North Carolina's potential first black governor Reginald Hawkins campaign around the Carolinas to register blacks to vote. They were suppose to start the push to register blacks to vote on April 3, but then a telegram from King's Atlanta office came to Hawkins on April 2.

Bill Clinton in Monroe on Friday: On behalf of presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton, her husband and former President Bill Clinton will be in Monroe on April 4 as part of his tour through the Charlotte area. He is supposed to speak at the Union County Agricultural Center at 1 p.m. April 4.

French teens protest against teacher job cuts: Thousands of peaceful demonstrators marched to the techno beat and waved colorful banners in protest of President Nicolas Sarkzoy's plan to cut cost and bureaucracy by cutting thousands of educational positions for the next school year. A few hundred broke off and hurled bottles and stones at riot police who responded with tear gas during the march on April 3. Police said 13 people were detained, but no injuries were reported. This was just one of several demonstrations on April 3 in France by high school students opposing the educational job cut plan.
