New photos released in UNC slaying case: On March 10 a suspect in the slaying of University of North Carolina's student body president Eve Carson was seen on surveillance photos using her ATM card. It appeared to be the same person seen in two ATM surveillance photos released March 8, said Chapel Hill police Chief Brian Curran. Police said they are attempting to enhance the two ATM photos. It clearly shows the driver of the SUV, but there is also a dark shape believed to be a male passenger in the rear seat.
CMS board to vote on bullying policy: A recent survey found that 40 percent of CMS high school students said bullying and harassment was major problem at their school. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education will vote on March 11 on a policy to help reduce this issue. There would will be a process for students and staff to report harassment. The policy would stop bullying and harassment based on race, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation. Some parents object because they say the policy promotes acceptance of homosexuality.

Vatican updates its thou-shalt-not list: The Vatican has decided to extend the list of what you shalt-not do. The Catholic Church says pollution, mind-damaging drugs, genetic experiments and social injustice are now sins to avoid. Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti, the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, says the "new sins ... are violations of the basic rights of human nature."

Gas prices hit record level: On March 10 the average gas price was $3.222, but it has risen half a cent to $3.227, stated the AAA Web site. That matched the price of Memorial Day weekend prices, when gas prices are known to go up. Regular averaged at $2.95 this time last month and $2.54 a year ago. Mid-grade gasoline rose 0.6 cent to $3.42 a gallon. Premium gasoline was 0.7 cent higher at $3.55. On March 10 diesel prices rose to a record setting $3.84, which is up 1.9 cents from the once $3.82 price.

Economists see U.S. avoiding recession: A new economic report says the United States economy will suffer because of the housing market, low job creation and low consumer spending, but the nation should avoid going into a recession this year. One could still happen, if the credit crisis crippling the housing market gets worse. This would prevent consumers from buying big-ticket items like cars and businesses and equipment, according to the quarterly Anderson Forecast by the University of California at Los Angeles.

Mississippi takes center stage in tight Democratic race: On March 11 the most Republican state in the nation takes the spotlight in the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination. Mississippi has not voted for a Democratic candidate in a presidential election in 32 years, but on March 11 they will hold a Democratic primary.
