News Candidate Heavyweights Face Off

With just days until the election, the heavyweights running for mayor faced off in the Fox Charlotte Studios Tuesday.
In the red (Republican) corner, with 12 years of sitting in the mayor’s chair under his belt, was Pat McCrory -- the man who makes every election day seem like Groundhog’s Day. And in the blue (Democratic) corner, a black woman with seven terms in the state house and a friend to payday lenders everywhere around North Carolina, Beverly Earle.
Each candidate was given the chance to ask the other questions about three issues and then there was the rebuttal period. Unfortunately, there were no YouTube users in sight to ask the burning questions.
What started out as a snarky "disbate" -- a discussion/debate -- was a love fest by the end with Earle and McCrory praising each other. Yawn.
Now, there were moments when things got a little testy. For instance, Earle praised the “democratic city council for a lot of the action that has taken place over the years” in regards to neighborhood development around the city.
McCrory retorted with, “I get no credit for any of that.”
News Past Local Hero Running Against Sue Myrick

The Loaf's 2006 Local Hero, Harry Taylor, is running against U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick in the 9th Congressional District. Though he's a longshot against the well-financed Myrick, Taylor has great recognition among local liberals. He's earned a lot of regard for his volunteer work with campaigns and progressive causes. Still, he's most known for the sharp words he directed at President Bush during an April 2006 visit to CPCC:
“In my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of [the] leadership in Washington. And I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and grace to be ashamed of yourself.”
(For disclosure's sake, I should note that Taylor was the real estate broker who handled lease negotiations when the Loaf moved to its office at the N.C. Music Factory.)
Film More Terror On TCM

It’s Halloween, which means that Turner Classic Movies will spend the entire day showing classic horror films from decades past.
Nine disparate titles fill the slate from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m., including one genuine classic – 1963’s The Haunting (6 p.m.) – and one genuine turkey – Ed Wood’s 1955 Bride of the Monster (9 a.m.), starring Bela Lugosi, Tor Johnson and a rubber octopus. Lugosi also turns up in 1940’s The Devil Bat (6 a.m.), while fellow horror icons Peter Cushing and Vincent Price star in, respectively, 1958’s The Revenge of Frankenstein (10:30 a.m.) and 1960’s House of Usher (4:30 p.m.).
Then from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m., the network will turn the spotlight on horror legend Boris Karloff in seven of his features. The roster includes 1933’s The Ghoul (8 p.m.), marking its TCM premiere; pairings opposite Lugosi in 1936’s The Invisible Ray (9:30 p.m.) and 1945’s The Body Snatcher (11 p.m.); and alongside Charles Laughton and Gloria Stuart (65 years before she played Old Rose in Titanic) in 1932’s The Old Dark House (12:30 a.m.).

The Plug This Just In!

CHARLOTTE -- Alcoholics Anonymous* meetings will temporarily shut down Wednesday when Creative Loafing, the city's premier (and only) alternative weekly welcomes new writer Cheris Hodges to the fold.
The newspaper will welcome Hodges 6 p.m. at Prevue, the NoDa bar that has quickly gained attention for debauchery since editor Carlton Hargro began hosting the weekly Poplife party.
"I hope my health insurance kicks in soon," Hodges said upon hearing the
news. "It looks like I'm going to need it."
Hodges comes to the Loaf from the Charlotte Post, where she was features
editor. A published novelist and experienced journalist, Hodges also has
canoodled with bestselling novelists and was credited with Karl Rove's
heart-wrenching decision to leave the Bush administration. Or so we hear.
All Creative Loafing staffers and their friends (at least the ones they
don't owe money) are invited to attend.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to buy Karen a beer," said Kim Lawson,
operations editor. "It's my way of giving back to the community."

The art exhibit Diverse Works '07 opened last Thursday at the N.C. Art Factory and will run through Nov. 21.
The exhibit is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

News When They Attack, You’ll Gawk At My Foresight

I’m not sure the bong-toting, hair-dying, bi-curious liberal losers down at Gawker.com’s Washington gossip blog, Wonkette, took a moment between mentally masturbating one another to consider how their attack of the CIA’s totally awesome “Terrorist Buster” logo might promote further acts of terrorism.
The truth is that terrorism is really any act of violence (passive or aggressive) against the American way of life; this is why the logo is so effective, because its saying no to all terrorists … not just the camel-jockeying variety.
The logo is quite obviously a large man, black, with a semitically obvious proboscis nose, curiously slanted asiatic eyes, a suggestively queer grin and is clearly brandishing a Russian-made automatic weapon. I can’t think of a better amalgamation of terrorist-related imagery, and as such, I am glad the logo is so well-designed.
But still, the rainbow-coalition over at Wonkette see the “Ghostbuster”-esque logo as, “some sort of imaginary Christian cheerleader representing the DCI Counterterrorist Center.” Well, I know who those idiots are gonna call when black-skinned, Korean homosexuals with kalishnikovs show up at their door speaking Hebrew, and it isn’t Allah!
