Youngblood Hawke, Cement Stars

When: Tue., April 23 2013

YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE “We Come Running” is a catchy, radio-friendly tune. Unfortunately, it does little to separate itself in a music landscape full of “oooh” and “aaah” choruses. Another of the L.A. quartet’s singles, “Stars,” follows suit. In other words, the band can write some catchy tunes for mass appeal, but there’s little in the way of originality. You’ll find yourself saying, “Oh, I’ve heard that song, but didn’t know who sang it,” or as someone involved in the local music scene once said, “I turn on the radio and constantly find myself saying, ‘It’s another band that sounds like Grouplove.’” Youngblood Hawke’s hooky choruses, set against a backdrop of pop-rock, are easy on the ears, but not much more. Worthy of note are Charlotte’s Cement Stars, who are opening.
