Stand-up comedian Willie Barcena describes himself on Twitter as “Not just another self-effacing Latino comic” — and it’s true. Emerging on the comedy front in the late ’90s as a gritty guy from East L.A.’s Boyle Heights, Barcena has since grown into an angry adult whom we pretty much can all relate to on one level or another. His 2012 Showtime special, dubbed “I Gotta Be Honest,” covered the strains that marriage and children can have on a tough guy. He also addressed religion and other random, everyday observations with animated flare. Rather than perpetuating stereotypes related to his ethnicity, Barcena unites his audiences, reminding us that we’re all a little loco sometimes. (Anita Overcash)
